Featureless Humor
Rædis and his best friend Traveler were on a long road trip in one of Rædis’ custom, one-off, amazing vehicle designs. This particular example was an electric grand touring car capable of covering long stretches of highway in great comfort at awesome speed.
They had been on the road since dawn that day and after a lazy lunch at a rest stop next to a scenic overlook, they were once again eating up the miles.
“That scenic overlook sucked. I’m glad you changed the sign.” said Rædis as he swung the car around a knucklehead driver who insisted on cruising in the passing lane next to a large, slow moving, cargo carrying vehicle as soon as the chance presented itself.
He said this because the terrain that was laid out before them at the time was flat, treeless grassland and was uninteresting in every way. Traveler had taken a tool from their road repair kit in their trunk and unbolted the part of the sign that said ‘scenic’ in reflective alien capitals rendering the spot simply and more aptly, an ‘overlook’.
“Plus we got a cool road souvenir out of it.” Traveler said turning briefly to look at the sign now laying across the back seat.
Soon, once back on the road the monotony of the lack of scenery combined with the quiet droning of the electric motor lulled him to sleep in the warm, soft passenger seat. When he awoke, it was dark and Rædis was still at the wheel, rolling them along.
“Do you ever sleep?” asked Traveler as he sparked up a cigarette and opened a thermos of hot coffee.
“Yeah. I have a ‘sleep’ setting, just as any hyper advanced machine would.” Rædis answered. “Even I have to shut down, so to speak, every once in a while. It’s sort of a ‘low entropy’ mode, if you will.
“Really? Do you dream? I just had a fun one, myself.”
“I’m a living being, yes of course I dream.” Rædis said as Traveler lowered his window a bit.
“Really?” Traveler said again, a bit surprised. “And what do you dream of?”
“Electric sheep.” the robot replied with a smirk.
Traveler sipped coffee from the thermos cap.
“Fantastic.” he said, rolling his eyes. “Starting the evening off with a Dick joke.”
Rædis chuckled and the pair continued along the flat, straight road. The dullness of the land obscured by the black, featureless night.
