Living the Dream
~
Just for a moment, I believed you meant I was finally enough for you- for us...
~
It was a party of some sort, I think, I don't know- you can't really be sure about these things, can you? Under the glow of fuzzy expectancy, I saw you walking towards me. On cue, my heart fluttered like a helpless feather caught in a tornado of emotions. You smiled faintly, held me by the arm and gently steered us outside. It was warm; your eyes were too. You hugged me and whispered, 'We're finally good enough. I'm so happy for you, and for myself.'
Your words revealed their meaning as a garden of pain and melancholia blossomed within me, sheltered by your touch and my jealousy. I stepped back from your tight embrace and forced myself to return the joy you radiated- then watched as we walked away from each other, your arms interlocked with another's. I desperately tried to escape that place but searing emotion stabbed at me, paralyzing me, till finally, slowly, fading... Drowning in tears unshed and words unsaid, I dissolved into the night...

Every time, any night, it didn't matter if I opened my eyes. After all, nightmares don't need monsters, darkness or fear - sometimes, reality is enough.
