Pretty May
le mai le joli mai en barque sur le Rhin...
G. Apollinaire, Mai
may pretty may in a boat on the Rhine...
G. Apollinaire, May
Looking for poetry, haikus, or any prose that celebrates beauty in the month of May. I would like to hear about regional beauty like the jacarandas in Los Angeles, or about a poignant moment, perhaps at a grave on Memorial Day. What makes May pretty for you?
As I'm all for brevity, please keep it under 500 words.
As the Ecliptic Turns: May
Every eight minutes I'm bathed in light
One month along our world's ecliptic
23 degrees align so right
Toward biochemistry eclectic
Pheromones precipitate
Out of proteins to which they're bound
Hormones exacerbate
Ushering each, to others, found
The month brings the wind
Blowing the cautions that are thrown
To let debauchery out from in
For reaping wild oats sown
A special photosynthesis
Angles with lighted, lusty slivers
Unique to those days of fickleness
Igniting the takers and givers
Knowledge of good and evil
And committing acts right or wrong
Are not products of moral upheaval
But airs, Earth, orbits along
Verdancy in May is more than green
And Spring is more than time
Ambrosia in the æther machine
That lets us savour sublime
