The Trumpeter
When terrifying trumpets blast
strange notes we cannot comprehend
but the simple notes permeate our ears
anyway, we separate ourselves
from all the others who listen to that same
trumpet's blast.
And when the notes get louder
so do we, and we claw and peck
at each other like angry magpies,
until we've forgotten
we all bleed the same.
And when the trumpeter stops his song
our mangled eyes dart, and our weakened bodies
twist and turn to see what's outside.
And all the blood is gone.
