Exact copy (Part 2)
It seemed to me that the eternity has passed before I returned to consciousness. Rachel had only two steps to make, when I instinctively threw napkins into her face. Adrenalin in my blood exceeded all possible standards in ten times. But it exactly saved my life. Probably in not more than two seconds I found myself in my bedroom behind its closed door. But once I felt saved a strong hit assailed into a door lock.
– Do you know who is responsible for your near death? – My sister asked with indifference. – It’s all about Amby… Amby Brooks. – She stopped for a second while I thoroughly tried to remember where I could hear this name. – Most likely you don’t even remember who it is. Of course, for what reason you should remember useless loser who was running after you during the whole tenth grade.
– What’s up with Amby? – I asked amazedly propping the door up with bedside table.
– You are not destined to find it out, I’m afraid. – Rachel said and stroke into the door lock with something heavy once again. – And what did he ever see in you.
I needed to temporize as long as possible. After all, Michael should be here in every minute, he is my last hope of salvation for now. And as ill luck would have it I can’t call him, the phone was left somewhere in the kitchen.
By the next hit Rachel demolished the door handle without a trace.
– So what, little sister, are you scared? – It was as if she was playing some game with me. – That’s O.K., there’s no so much time left for you to be scared. I’ll finish it all up soon. – Her intonations scared me far more than everything happening.
– I don’t know what Amby has told you, but I truly don’t understand what on earth is going on.
Exerting every effort, I moved the wardrobe standing near the wall to the doorway, thereby gaining some time.
– Amby created a problem for me. Which can be solved only by your death. – Rachel was evidently in madness.
After a few hits the door was completely broken. And my life directly depended on the old wardrobe.
– Why are you so stubborn, Milly? – She leaned against the wardrobe wall and started to talk nonsense. – We have the same aims, I understand. But why wouldn’t you allow me to enter and finish in all?
And at this every moment the door belt rang. How long I've been waiting for him.
– Keep silence. – She whispered. – Or else I’ll wring his neck.
But I did not even think of listening to her.
– Mi-i-ichael! – I shouted as hard as I could. – Mi-i-ichael!
I was banging my hands on the old wardrobe not feeling the pain at all.
– I was taught to solve the problems standing on my way. – Rachel began to move away from the blocked way to my room. – You can say goodbye to your bridegroom, Milly.
Only a few minutes passed when a terrible crash rang out from the hallway.
I tried to move the wardrobe to help my man somehow anyway. But all my attempts were futile. More than anything else I hated this clothes giant, although it was really saving my life a minute ago.
Then I had an inspiration. Bringing it down on the floor is much easier. You just need to grab as high as possible.
Putting in it all left forces, I finally got out of my destroyed bedroom.
Michael was laying on the floor unconscious, when Rachel was sitting on him and tightening a TV cord around his neck.
Sense of reality has absolutely left me. Even now I can’t remember how, but I struck her in temples’ area with such power that she was thrown to the front door as a children's doll.
Then I automatically called emergency service.
– Human isn’t breathing! Help! – I couldn’t even hear my voice because of experienced shock.
– Are you at 38 Drive Avenue?
– Sorry? – I asked to repeat. – Yes! You’re right!
– An ambulance service has departed, wait.
But the first comers were far from ambulance. Three black jeeps with state numbers appeared almost after my call.
– Milly Monagan? – A man who got out of a huge off-road vehicle asked me.
– Yes, it’s me. – I replied aloofly.
And at this very moment the resuscitation machine appeared on the horizon. I thought I was awaiting it for the eternity.
I rushed to paramedics explaining what was going on while running. After two minutes Michael was transferred to the nearest hospital.
– Miss Monagan, I need to talk to you. I’m afraid, we won’t leave here before it. – The man was assertive.
I looked at him and sat on a road curb.
– Take her away, she is near the entrance. – He said to his people. – Are you in the know who is this girl?
I shook my head negatively.
– I’ll try to explain step by step. The core is that Amby Brooks is the first human who created an artificial intelligence. This project was started a long time ago and was kept in a close secret. But, unfortunately, Amby’s madness ruined his career. We understood too late that he made the robot identical to his madness. He was crazy about you, Milly. – The man paused to consider of something and shortly after it continued. – Amby gave her only a basic principle, to become a human. Or he would cut her off, and she’d die. By the Internet she began to study fast, purposing her final object. And soon she understood how to avert death. To become a human, you need to be a human. She found her exact copy on the Internet and came to you after disconnection of all systems of tracking.
– Killing me for becoming a human? – I asked once more. Believing in what was happening was just impossible…
– That’s how she found a way to survive. To take your place. When you cut her off, we had a signal about her location. The sensor restarted. And while we were coming I learnt all the details.
– What’s about Amby’s fate?
– I’m terribly sorry… But she killed him. He was standing on her way, preventing her from achieving the final object. – After sustaining a pause he went on. – You will receive a large compensation , but I have only one request, let all things I said be remained between us.
For another minute we were sitting in silence, then he got in the car and I’d never seen him again…

Exact copy (Part 1)
Michael will come in an hour, when I still have nothing done. I was running around the kitchen as I was wound-up.
Finally, I have a man appeared in my life with whom I feel myself happy. To be honest, I didn’t understand at once that he is the only one I was dreaming about. After my husband abandoned me, it was hard enough to get into my circle of trust. But Michael managed to do it, also it was very challenging for him. I still feel awkward about him.
A story about the husband turned out dolefully. Probably I endeavored too hard for him. When we bought a car, I got fixed up in a second job. Just wanted to close a loan as fast as possible. I barely stood on my feet when I came home. But there was no time to rest, I ought to feed my man.
And after he was laid off, he became just unbearable. But I endured. I understood that it’s hard time for him. At some moment his depressions turned into fits of anger, a string of scandals began. It’s complicated to say why I didn’t leave him, most likely it was compassion together with a six-year habit.
We had been dating for two years, and everything was simply magnificent. But when he made a proposition and we got married, it was like he was quite a different person. Routine life had begun, and Gerald was totally unready for it.
I still remember the evening when I came after work and he was packing his stuff with some female student.
“– I’m sorry, Milly, but our matrimony has exhausted itself. – He told me with indifference. – I hope the divorce will be without any excesses”.
I didn’t even say a word, I kept standing in a hallway at a total loss. And when they went away, I sat down near the window, looking at the evening city till deep night.
At that time I made only one conclusion. If fire stops burning, there’s no point in running around its site trying to get warm.
A doorbell interrupted my memories, and smile immediately appeared on the face.
– To be honest, I thought you will be a bit later. – I said while opening the door. But the person behind it wasn’t Michael… She was far from Michael.
Creeps ran over all my body because of surprise.
– I’m sorry, probably I should call you first. – My exact copy was standing at the doorstep. – I’m Rachel, your sister. – And she smiled and gave me her hand.
I can’t even partially describe what has happened inside me. The whole range of emotions which people could have rushed into my life all at once.
– I was waiting for something like that, I was in the same condition when I learnt about all of this.
A phone call led me out of stupor. I picked up the phone and gestured to invite Rachel to my home.
– Hi, Michael. – My consciousness gradually returned to normal.
– Listen, I am to linger. There’s a small accident at work.
– Something serious? – I asked with emotion.
– Well, no, a new engineer came and brought down all the settings. The work takes an hour and a little, not more. Don’t take offence at me, please, okay? I’ll try to finish it faster. – He is always afraid of offending me.
– Everything is alright, don’t worry. I’ll just finish with dinner. If it succeeds, I’ll introduce my sister to you. – I looked at Rachel who was still standing in hall not knowing where to go.
– I didn’t know you have a sister. – Michael was surprised.
– Neither did I. O.K., let’s talk after meeting. I’m waiting for you.
– Alright, honey. Bye. I’ll try to be faster. – He said one more time.
***
– You have a nice flat. – Rachel looked around. – Did you create the design by yourself or the specialists helped you?
– Could say by myself, there were such specialists. – I waved offhandedly. – You may go to the living room while I’m making coffee for us. – I was always courteous to my guests.
– Thank you, I don’t want. I had a snack in a small café before coming to you. – She was radiant with happiness.
I must admit I was very happy, too. We have a lot to talk about. It’s a pity that our parents cannot say anything anymore. Dad was gone when I was a little child. Mother – two years ago, didn’t undergo an operation. She should have had tumor removed.
Doctors quickly said that there’s almost no chance. Cancer was discovered too late, at its last stage. Cases of healing with such diagnosis in the whole world can be counted on fingers. But let’s not talk about sad things, my sister, about the existence of which I learned fifteen minutes ago, is sitting in front of me now. And I want to know everything about her.
– It’s strange that parents didn’t say anything about you. – I thoughtfully glanced at the family photo.
– I don’t know how this story got its beginning. But before his death father told me that I have a native sister. And that we are similar to each other as like as two peas. – She was telling me about herself, when I was listening to her as I was spellbound. – I didn’t get any details from him, and moreover, I didn’t believe him at first. And anyway how I could believe alcoholic with twenty-five years of experience. – Rachel thought about her past and was about to fail keeping back her tears.
I hugged her and had a strange feeling. I wanted to cry, too, but only because of happiness. I can’t convey my emotions, I had so many of them during the day that I completely cannot tell them apart.
– I haven’t ever introduced myself, I’m Milly. – I wanted to calm her down as fast as possible. – You know what? Stay with me today. – I glanced at her with inquiring look.
– I don’t even know, I don’t want to cause any inconvenience to you. – Rachel totally hanged her head.
– Come that way: you stop crying and I go for napkins.
– O.K. – Rachel smiled through tears.
There was such a mess in my room I could hardly find what was needed.
And when I returned to the kitchen, another surprise was waiting for me. Rachel was looking at me holding a kitchen-knife in her hands.
– So, little sister, it’s time to say goodbye to each other. – My guest said and slowly went to my side...

Willer’s Book (Part 4)
…I was looking at him being in a stupor, unable to say a word.
— Don’t worry about me, Olivia, everything is alright. This place… — he took a view of the county and calmly continued. — Everything is different here, I can’t explain it to you.
But at that moment I was agitated by absolutely another question.
— I… I don’t understand, you’ve just come back… And why do I hear your voice while others are frightened only of my appearance?
— Unfortunately, I just can’t tell you about many things, after all, the boundaries of knowledge just don’t exist here. There are things that it’s too early for people to know about. — he pointed to the road, offering to go for a walk a little. — And the fact you are able to hear me is the most interesting one, and why didn’t I guess it earlier. But you’ll understand everything soon… And by the way, it’s very important. There is a black device with a metal handle in the office where you found the book. It resembles a small hand organ. I will be happy if you can start it.
— I won’t see you anymore… — I said looking into the emptiness.
— Things aren’t so easy, and, frankly speaking, even I don’t know the answer to this question. — Henry took my hand, and I immediately felt better.
We were unhurriedly walking along the main street until I met my father again. He was dangling after that woman. But who is she, I thought to myself.
— She is his best friend’s wife. — Henry said calmly.
— You can read my thoughts!? — I wondered.
— I’ve already said it, knowledge doesn’t have any boundaries in this place. — he smiled gently and prolonged. — His friend died in a car accident, and his wife was left alone with a small child. She asked your father for help a number of times, but he always rejected. He was held by an offence as long as he lived. — Henry took a deep breath. — When you and your friend fall in love with the same woman and she makes her choice not in your favor, it’s very painful, Olivia… Very painful…
— It’s strange, he didn’t tell me about it.
— You barely became only a year and a half at that time. You were so pretty in your childhood. — after saying this Henry broke into a smile. — Don’t look at me such a way, the concept of time doesn’t exist here as well.
And suddenly I felt that I am sharply falling asleep. Fighting with this wish was just impossible. I began to settle on the ground and after a minute came to my senses in the small office.
I didn’t even realize at once what was happening. Unauthorised persons were talking in the flat. I carefully adjusted my dressing gown and went to the corridor.
— Who are you? And who let you go there at all? — the policeman asked being at a total loss.
— I’m a mistress of this flat. — I uttered already understanding that something irreparable had happened.
— Did you know who Henry Chaise was?
— Yes… He rented one of my rooms, did something happen to him? — goose-flesh ran through my body as a wave.
— He is in coma now, the neighbors heard a shot and called the police.
— So that’s why I could talk to you… — I pronounced in a whisper.
— Sorry? — the policeman was amazed not less than I.
— Everything is O.K., and in which hospital is he laying?
— Brooklyn Hospital.
When the policemen finished their work, I shut myself in the Henry’s room and began to look for a small hand organ.
It caught my eyes right away.
I was turning a handle until a sound came from a black box.
“— You knew that I will find you, Henry. And you knew which end it will have.
— If this book happens to be in wrong hands…
— It is in wrong hands already. Are you alone here? — An unknown man said in a cold voice.
— Do you see somebody else? It’s you who killed my father, you killed. I will never forgive you for this, did you hear? Never!
— Of course you will not, fool, you’ll have no time. — the speaker smirked, and a shot rang out”.
The sound stopped, and tears flowed from my eyes.
I have been sitting in the intensive care unit near his bed for the fifth day. The doctor said that there is almost no hope, but I distinctly remembered his words that even he does not know the answer to the question will we see each other again or not. We will see, Henry, we will definitely see…

Willer’s Book (Part 3)
— Into this world?! — I asked again.
— I think you’ve understood where you are. — He looked at my amazed face and continued. — My father often was there. Exactly he was a person who constructed this device. He had to hide it into this book that it would not get into the wrong hands. — Henry sighed deeply. — But Larry Nickson betrayed him. His best friend and colleague stroke a stab in the back. He was afflicted with the international recognition. And when my father asked him to forget about what he had seen, Larry was as if he went crazy. — Henry was telling me about it with a great difficulty. — Just think about the consequences to which the publicity could bring. The entire world’s system, which had been being created for thousands of years, would have been broken irretrievably. — He looked away and wiped his eyes. — I don’t know how, but Larry got an appointment with the minister, and then they declared a real hunt on my father. They found him very quickly, but Willer’s Book had been already hidden in a safe place. Since that time I have seen my father only in this village…
— I’m so sorry… — I said with sympathy.
— Nothing wrong, Olivia, you couldn’t play any role here. The most horrible thing is that I wasn’t able to talk to him. He is running from me every time I try to get close to him. Like all the others in this place. He could fall into there, but establishing communication with the other world was beyond his power. — After Henry had told me it, he felt a lot better. — I’ve already tried everything possible, but I didn’t move off dead center.
— And how can we return? — this question was worrying me since I’ve just happened to be there.
— It’s easy, at some moment you will desire to sleep, and fighting with this wish will be impossible. Apparently, our organism spends a lot of resources on being in this place. And you will wake up exactly where you opened the book.
Nearly during two hours we were sitting on the bank of the pond and discussing this place.
The sun was idly setting, but I absolutely didn’t want to sleep.
— I was there for a long time when I came for the first time, too. — Henry noted. — And then I used to fall into sleep in fifteen minutes. By the way, I haven’t understood what the duration of my appearances depends on.
— I don’t what to say about all this. — I had a quite strange state. A deep inner calm have totally captured my body.
— My reaction was a lot more emotional, although I had already known where I’m going. — Henry yawned and began to fall sideways looking at me. — See you, Olivia, it seems that I have to go. I'll see you at home.
I was looking at him uninterruptedly until he completely dissolved in the air.
After sitting near the pond for twenty minutes more, I decided to stroll the village. And some time I will get there, I should confess it is sad for me to realize it. Nevertheless, life after death exists, but somebody hardly imagined it like this.
I was walking the streets, periodically glancing at the foreyards. The only one thing that arrested my attention was the fact people were doing nothing. They were always going somewhere, but at the same time they did not undertake any activity.
At some moment my eyes fell on my father again, and I determined to watch him. I don’t know why, but he was dangling after unknown woman during all the time. I don’t think he was unfaithful to my mother, most likely she is his first love. To learn anything from him was an impossible thing. Probably that is why my mind was thinking of such cranky ideas.
It is oddly, I thought, the village is so small, but all the time my eyes meet different faces.
And suddenly I felt so upset, all these people, they have relatives, after all. If only there was a way to give them access to this reality. Living on earth would be easier. Even if people cannot contact with them, they would know that their relations are alive.
All at once I heard painfully familiar voice behind me. Right away I did not understand who it was.
— Hi, Olivia. Happy to see you again.
I turned round and saw Henry, and cold sweat ran all over my body… He was dressed in casual clothes…

Willer’s Book (Part 2)
”Or these people are not alright, or there is something wrong with me”, — I thought. Having a look at myself I felt astonishment for the umpteenth time. When did I change my clothes?
I was dressed up in an ample T-shirt and something reminiscent of sports trousers. All clothes were white. But shoes impressed me the most: it looked like thick white socks made of unknown material. I would also fling aside from myself.
But why were they dressed up normally? I was delaying the answer to this question as long as I could, but my mind was busily getting his own way. I have died…
This thought reflected as a tremble in my body. I began shivering, and air that had been light before became as if it turned into lead.
I should have lost consciousness, I have just lost my consciousness, soon I will regain it and everything will be in the way it used to.
I pinched myself by my left hand and almost screamed in pain.
Well, I need to calm down. I feel pain, it means that my body is okay.
“But it means nothing!” — my mind responded immediately. Where am I?! What has happened to me?! And what the hell is going on?!
And suddenly I have understood. It is all because of Henry. He is now somewhere here, too. And I think he knows about this place a lot more than I do.
This thought relaxed me quickly. It remains only to find him.
After intuitive choosing the way I went in search of him.
The sun was mercilessly beating down my face, and that road seemed to be just endless. I was walking on the beaten rubble mixed up with sand during nearly three hours, and it seemed that I was about to fall down flat-out. A strong thirst gave no rest. But I was not going to give up, I needed to find Henry. I need to find Henry at all hazards.
Finally I breathed with relief, when a small village appeared in the distance. I hope people who live there are more amenable than those elderly woman with the girl whom I had met on my way.
Being totally exhausted I came to the village, and the first person I saw was a stout man nearly forty years old.
— Pardon me, don’t you know… — having a look at me he dashed aside and ran to his house in a second.
What is it?! What is happening at all?!
This story recurred with every person I met with, and after twenty minutes of looking for normal people I gave up.
After taking a seat on a porch of some house I could finally relax. Pleasant fatigue filled my body. I will have a rest a little and continue looking for Mr. Chaise, he is exactly somewhere here.
I leaned against the wall of somebody’s house and closed my eyes for a while. How nice it is – to feel your body, I am still alive, I hear my heart’s beating, I feel light breeze, I hear the nature, I live… It seemed to me I began to drop into sleep, when it suddenly thundered and the house’s walls started to shiver although there was not a cloud in the sky.
I had opened my eyes, and I was even more surprised. Thus much that I barely forced myself to say this word.
— Father?! — and he ran away from me to the forest as if he was in a wild fright and passed out of sight after two minutes.
It was just an illusion, it cannot be true. It looks like I have hallucinations. I need to search for Henry in the shortest time possible.
I recovered my feet and decided to go round the whole village. He must be somewhere. And I was right, he was. And he was dressed up in these strange clothes, too. He was sitting near a small pond and glazing at the far bank.
— Well, hello, my dear neighbor. — I said with not the most pleasant tone. — Don’t you want to tell me anything?
— Olivia? And what are you doing here?
I briefly told him about how I had got in this unknown place.
— And what is the strangest thing is that I’ve just seen my father! Henry, I saw my father, it is not a delusion or hallucination. But he just died seven years ago.
— Did you hear anything about Willer’s Book? — he asked softly-softly.
— This literary work often appeared in the Internet, is it some kind of esoterica or something like that? — I answered the question with a question.
— It is not a book, Olivia. It is a complicated quantum device which allows living people to fall into this world. — and he showed the place where we found ourselves by his hands…

Willer’s Book (Part 1)
This incredible story laid its beginning in the mid-June. After my chief had cut my wage I had simply nothing to pay for the flat.
I forgot about new things, stopped meeting with friends. And food on a table reminded student’s lunch in increasing frequency. Then I decided to rent one of my rooms.
Living alone in a spacious three-room flat is, of course, a marvelous thing, but a single girl with a salary of eight hundred dollars cannot afford it.
The girlfriend advised me a good realtor. By the evening he has already taken photos of his new object.
Having published an advertisement in all well-known bases we got three customers the next day. In the person of two girls and one young man.
Initially I planned that a girl would be my neighbor, but having looked at the potential room-mates I trended to the side of the young man.
He was of a middle high, with short fair hair, in a dark-blue vinous-checked jacket. It seemed to me that an aristocrat from an english province. And as soon as he started speaking I understood I had not been in a wrong thought about him.
— Good evening. — He offered me his hand. — Henry Chaise.
— Olivia Newman. — I was surprised having offered a hand in return.
— Hope I won’t give you any inconvenience.
“About which inconvenience can we talk” – I thought – “when there is such a gentleman in front of me”. Even more I will say, for some reason I wanted him to cause me inconvenience. Because of these thoughts I turned red.
It is time for looking for a man, I pointed. Dry wine has already stopped saving me from loneliness.
— If you need something, I’ll be always near. Or you may call me, now you have my number. — I gave him a room key and smiling flirtatiously went to my own room.
Frankly speaking, I saw him only two times since he moved to me. Although a full week has already passed.
But once he strongly amazed me. I returned from a work and already from the doorstep heard nice music. The table in the kitchen was designed like in a restaurant. Candles, a bottle of expensive wine, half-filled glasses were standing there, and this wonderful smell of hot dishes that for me it is still hard to forget it.
— Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t know you’re waiting for guests. — I felt a little uneasy.
— Most likely I’m the guest in this flat. — he took the strain off correctly. — I made this dinner for you.
You cannot imagine how pleased was I. I did not have any words. It might seem I did not make a mistake in choosing my lodger.
— For what reason is such an honor, pardon me? — I politely showed interest in the reason of my amazement.
— A great success in work. In our family it was adopted to celebrate all of the achievements to strengthen positive emotions from your work. — He carefully moved the chair aside inviting me to sit at the table.
Food was just unbelievable. Not every restraint can offer such dishes, and including his service I fell into a fairy tale.
— And in which sphere do you work? — I asked hoping to learn at least something about my tenant.
— Everything is rather simple, I’m writing scientific efforts in physics. I have been interested in science since childhood, that’s why it’s a great pleasure to me in addition to work.
— I’ve never had a thought that I would be sitting in my kitchen with a young scientist. Moreover, drinking a red wine with him after the dinner he had made for me. — We laughed a bit. — Maybe we can go and watch a movie? Don’t think anything wrong, I just have a lack of communication.
— Unfortunately I can’t, I need to finish one job. It’s very important, please, understand me. Let’s go for a walk? Perhaps, tomorrow, nearly at 7 p.m.? — His politeness persuaded me not to fall into confusion.
— Thank you, Henry, it seems like I feel that I’m alive again. In recent times difficulties have completely deprived me of the sense of existence.
— We’re attracting difficulties by ourselves. If you’re bowled down, you need to make efforts to stand up, but we are lying down in the puddle and waiting for somebody to help us. People have totally lost their volition and belief in themselves. — He hugged me softly and wished good night. — I’ll take everything away, don’t worry. And more, Olivia. — I turned back and looked at him with hope. — Don’t forget, tomorrow at 7.
At night there was a loud clap behind the wall, and I slipped on a dressing gown and went to learn if everything is alright.
— Henry, are you okay? — There was a total silence behind the wall. — Henry!? — I repeated.
I took a spare key and opened his room, but it was empty. Nothing has changed there, everything was like at the time I leased it. And only the room reserved for the office was covered with thick curtains. I looked into it cautiously: there were some instruments standing everywhere, but Henry was not there, too. A black book was scattered about the floor, and I opened the first page after I had picked it up.
Then there was only a bright flash, and I was already lying on the floor. Eyesight began recover only after fifteen minutes. I felt like I had been sleeping for a thousand of years.
Having looked around I did not understand anything. I am lying amidst a field somewhere in the open, the sun is shining, and there is no a single man around.
I saw a road in the distance and made my way to it, it brought me to the first people. An elderly woman and a girl were going towards.
— Excuse me, could you tell me… — I did not even finish the sentence when they flung themselves aside from me as if they were dumbfounded.

DNA (Fantastic thriller)
It has been twelve years since that terrible accident which took off my dear Stacey’s life. That evening I stayed at home with our son, Oscar. It happened when she was coming back from her parents, it was raining heavily, and visibility was nearly at a zero level. Getting dark is a quite early thing in our area. I do not even know if Stacey had a chance to survive. The car was completely burnt out after the collusion, identification was carried out by DNA. It took a lot of time for me to believe in what was going on. Too many coincidences, but even more pain and even more emptiness. Oscar was just a year and a half when she was gone. I thought we would come through it, but life had another point. The first month was just unendurable, it is hard to say where I took a power to live on. A dreadful depression and a lack of meaning in future existence killed me every single day. Every day I woke up and desired to die. I stayed alive only for him. Our little Oscar, a small piece of your soul.
I long for you to see him, he is a real genius. At the age of seven he painted a picture which took the first place at city’s competition of children’s drawings. When he was in the kindergarten I’ve already sent him to the art school to divert his mind from the tragedy somehow.
I’m writing this letter, and occasionally I feel a smile through tears on my face. After all, the achievements of our son are of our merit, too. I’m proud of him. When I finish writing my thoughts, I will have to hide this letter. After three days I will burn it alone with nature. I will burn out all my pain, as my psychoanalyst said. At least it should become much easier. I need to live further, Stacey. I can’t be like that anymore…
I put a pen aside and wiped the tears away. I had to conceal the letter on the top shelf of the bookcase. Nobody has peeked there for five years.
— Hi dad, I’m home. — Oscar shouted while entering the house. I should confess he had me over the barrel. — What has happened? — He understood I was remembering his mother again. My eyes didn’t have enough time to become dry. — Everything is alright, don’t mind it. Give me a couple of minutes. — I tried to avoid showing him my tribulations. He had suffered enough without maternal love.
— Imagine, I made a mess in a whole class today. I proved to my physics teacher that his task may be accomplished in two ways.
— You should spare his nerves, he is to teach a lot of generations a thing or two. — I softly made witticisms to divert from my thoughts.
— Don’t worry dad, I will substitute him if something happens.— And we laughed.
Oscar went to his room while I started making a dinner. The TV-set was broadcasting in the background, and I was in high spirits, what seemed strange. Firstly after all these years I felt myself good. Maybe it was because I saw our son being happy, or maybe my psychoanalyst’s task had an effect. It is hard to say, and there is no need to delve into these things, the main thing is that it is good for me and that the son comes home with a smile on his face.
I put lasagna into the oven and went upstairs to the first floor.
— May I come in? — I asked having knocked at the door.
—Yes, sure. — Oscar was sitting in front of the notebook, evidently, he was chatting with friends. Social networks, they are like the whole world for teenagers.
— Dinner will be made in twenty minutes, will you go downstairs?— I went up to the window and began to stare into the distance.
—O.K., I’ll just finish one deal.
—Listen, maybe we could repeat that evening? Remember, when we were watching ‘’Dreams behind the Wall’’ and discussing everything happening on the screen without carrying emotions.
—I'm only for it, I’ll search for something interesting right now. —Oscar lit up with a foretaste of the joint evening.
— I’ll wait for you downstairs, come down after all. — and I left him alone that he could calmly clear off his deals.
We had a bite and having put the dishes in the sink made ourselves comfortable on the couch. Flash drive has already been in the TV-set, we should only turn on the next masterpiece.
— What’s its name? — I asked with a great interest.
— ‘’The Dark Matter’’, something about universe. Rating is very high. — he began to conduct manipulations with the TV remote, and signature tune appeared on the screen.
It was an incredible film, I declare. Some theories of eminent physicist of the whole world were at the heart of it.
I won’t give you the bottom line, omit spoilers. But its idea turned out more attractive than a hackneyed title.
After watching we brewed tea and powwowed what we had seen. During the film we did not want to do it at all. The theme was too difficult and besides very interesting. Generally, Oscar and I were sitting in front of TV like two decent zombies.
— The core isn’t there. — son argued with me. — People made it by themselves having alienated collective mind from them. We hate each other and want to survive in this chaos. It’s impossible until every man for himself. People must understand that we should live for the sake of others. We will develop all fields of our science in leaps and bounds only together. But for now we’re just animals which can speak. Humans’ progress is at a very low level for now. — I was sitting with my mouth open having nothing to say. He was absolutely right.
— We’re just animals which can speak. — I repeated his words.
— Dad, are you okay? — he was looking at my face and snapping his fingers near the eyes.
— Oh, yeah. I buzzed for a while. Your thoughts are pretty well. I thought it’s much easier.
— All right, I'm going to bed, I am to get up at seven in the morning tomorrow. —he rinsed a cup out and went to his room.
After his words I couldn’t come to my senses for a quite long time. All telecasts seemed to be a primitive delusion which was entertaining slavers tired of routine.
I fell asleep wandering in my thoughts continuously leafing through channels. I had an output the next day, so I could afford to lie down at any time.
Oscar went away so silently that he didn’t wake me up.He certainly does not want a sense of tact. I got up about twelve. My head was in such a state as if I didn’t sleep at all. Coffee, a shower, a morning walk. Coming to consciousness becomes more difficult with age.
I was walking in a high street then that terrible bell rang.
— Mr. Lionel? I’m a school pediatrician.
— Something happened to Oscar? —the ground started to slip away from under my feet.
—He’s alive, don’t worry. — the doctor falsely cleared his throat and continued. — Once a half of a year we take a sample from children and Oscar’s last results confused us a lot. Sir, we checked his data a lot of times, error is excluded. By and large, a rare breach is found in his DNA. Only seven people on the planet have it now. Our medicine is incapable of curing this. We don’t know the nature of phenomena like this. As practice shows, he has about six months left. I’m very sorry, Mr. Lionel. — my phone fell on asphalt, and I ran as fast as my legs could carry one. I was running till the forces ran out.
I was revived by some strangers, apparently I lost my consciousness because of overload.
— Are you okay, sir?—they were anxious about me. — Maybe we should call a doctor?
— No, there’s no need to. What time is it now?— I lost all track of it when I broke my phone.
—Twenty minutes past five. —they took me by the arms and helped to stand up.
— Thanks for help. Visibly, I lost my con
sciousness. Don’t worry, now I’ll reach my home. —staggering strongly I walked towards my street.
Oscar came home at about 7 p.m. I drank a half a glass of whiskey to take away the stress. I shouldn’t tell him about the disease. So it will be easier for him.
—Did you see the news? The whole world is chained to the screens. All channels transmit only one thing. —he turned on the TV-set not allowing me to say a word.
A slight tremor swept over the whole body.
«Unidentified flying object hovers above New York. For now it is hard to mention what it is, but experts from NASA persuade that it has come from a long space. They were observing it for a long time, but no one rushed to draw conclusions ahead of time. Strange creatures were registered by some CCTV cameras. They are obviously familiar with teleportation, because they easily appear and disappear in the remotest corners of the planet. Eyewitnesses do not carry their emotions. Aliens did not show aggression till now».
— Is that what, someone’s joke? — I glazed at my son.
— Hardly. Looks like extraterrestrial guests are exploring us. I heard they cannot talk. Communicate by some unintelligible sounds.
— The main point is that they are far away from us. I would not like to be in New York now.
—That's for sure. — Oscar slightly laughed.
About eleven the son went to sleep. And I prolonged watching news.
After a half of an hour I heard my son’s scream. Falling down the couch I ran to the first floor. The door was locked, and I kicked in the lock’s area with all my might. Breaking a part of doorjamb I rushed in.
An alien was holding my child’s head and scanning his brain with a dark blue laser. It is difficult to convey what happened next, but I calmed down only in a half of an hour. When I fell flat-out on the humanoid having brought my hands down to the bone. It has been lying motionless for nearly twenty minutes, and I was striking in his face in the heat of passion at the while. Having lost my vigor totally, I fell on my side. Son came to me and hugged me standing on his knees.
— Are you alright? — I had a strong shortness of breath.
— Everything’s okay, I was frightened only when I saw him. The rest of the time I was as if in my sleep.
After an hour we called an ambulance, and we were brought to the military hospital. Heaven only knows by what this unbidden guest could infect us. He was taken by some special services.
The next morning a head doctor went to me.
— I have two tidings for you, Mr. Lionel. The first one will please you much. Your son is completely cured. No flaws were detected in his DNA. But the other one…
— I hope it’s good news, too? — I glanced at the doctor, but he was obviously delaying the answer.
— We have analyzed your nightly visitor… I don’t know how to tell you that and how it’s possibly could be… But the DNA of the humanoid you killed is identical to the DNA of your dead wife… She didn’t scan your son’s brain, sir, she cured it. I’m sorry, but I have to go. And you, I suppose, should stay in privacy.—the doctor slammed the door, and tears began to flow down my cheeks…
