Challenge Ended
I held the basketball in my hands. Another free throw. Where other sports I excelled, 5th grade hoops was more difficult.
I hoisted the ball, steadied myself, and aimed for the center of the rim.
To my right, just above the treeline, a glowing orange disk appeared. It traversed the sky without a sound and paused, hovering overhead.
"What is that?" I thought. "It must be the sun. The sun doesn't move like that." Ran the conversation as my mind tried to grasp what I was seeing.
And then I blinked, long and slow, and a period of darkness, that lasted how long I cannot say for sure. How can so much time be inside the blink of an eye?
The next moment I was aware of my surroundings the basketball was no longer in my hands. I looked to my left and saw it laying in the grass.
"Huh?" I wondered.
I looked back again to the craft in the sky. It hovered for a few moments more and then flew slowly across the field. When it reached the treeline on the other side, it shot at sharp angle into space and was gone.
