Little Engineer
A 13 year-old boy walks into his dad’s office seeing planning layouts, schedules, blueprints/model infrastructures, cost estimates, and math formulas/equations. When he is walking in the boy sees his future ahead of him. His dad inspires him to become what he is when he grows up, a civil engineer. A career in Civil engineering can be very challenging, but it promises great financial and personal rewards. Civil engineering is gaining more importance in the world today because there is an increasing need for buildings and structures to be constructed.
What is Civil engineering? Civil engineering is the second-oldest engineering discipline after military engineering. A civil engineer engages in the design of temporary structures, site planning, scheduling, layout, cost estimating, and cost control. Civil engineers touch many aspects of our everyday life including, roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. Civil engineers build some of the most common places in every day life.
Some qualities necessary to succeed in this job are teamwork skills, creativity, and a fine knowledge of math and science. A civil engineer should have good teamwork skills because for the most part it’s a collaborative effort to design, build and complete a structure. A Civil engineer should be able to think critically and find a solution towards complex problems. These are the most important qualities to becoming a Civil engineer.
Civil Engineers work in many different settings ranging from quiet, modern offices to job sites in remote areas. They may travel frequently or relocate temporarily while working on a distant project. Like for instance, you can live here in Los Angeles while the project that you’re assigned to can be anywhere in the US or even around the world.
Here are some duties and responsibilities that civil engineers will perform everyday. They specialize in the design, checking of layout and setting of buildings, studying the work plan submitted by the contactor, suggesting any modification and ensuring the correct work according to technical specifications. A Civil engineer will follow the project from start to finish and make any necessary changes along the way.
