Uptown Funky
Motown is considered both a style of music and a recording label. “The Motown Sound”, specialized in a type of soul music. The Motown Sound used often electric bass-guitar lines and singing style that originated in gospel music. The term “Motown” comes from the origins where the origins first took place in, Detroit, also known as motor city. In Jan 12, 1959, Berry Gordy Jr. launched the Motown record label. It was the first ever record company to be owned and operated by an African-American and also primarily feature African-American musicians. Some of Motown’s well-known artists include The Funk Brothers, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Four Tops, Diana Ross, The Miracles, The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and many more. The record label of Motown, sets of various artists, and the Motown sound, quickly soared into popularity, and soon became one of the most successful independent recording company in the US by the middle of the 1960’s. The success of these artists and more, led Motown to 79 records in the Billboard Top Ten between 1960-1969. In conclusion to Motown’s future, in the late 80’s and 90’s all of major artists would be inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Motown gave us meaning of love, joy, soul, and grooving through the best thing our ears can hear, music.
