Romance at a Price
I had too much to drink
When the cool night air
Mixed with the whiskey
As I navigated sidewalks
Riddled with years of neglect
Between the cracks and the curb
I gained horizontal perspective
The tinny blood of a bitten tongue
Uninhibited and unashamed
Myself, the moon and the stars
The street itself offered salvation
She was draped in deep reds
And wore a sodium vapor halo
It was everything I could do to ask
'Are you my angel?'
'No,' she said, 'not yet'
'Are you a cop?' she asked, scripted
Addled, I couldn't respond
As I watched her quietly float away
