Harry Situation Reviews: Captain Underpants
Tra-la-laaaaa!
Like Wonder Woman, Captain Underpants finally gets its big screen adaptation from the popular children's book of the same name. The story revolves around two best friends George Beard (voiced by Kevin Hart) and Harold Hutchins (voiced by Thomas Middleditch) and the chaotic adventures of their principal, Principal Krupp (voiced by Ed Helms), after they inadvertently hypnotized him into a comedic superhero of their creation, Captain Underpants.
I remember reading these books back in grade school and they were enjoyable to read. I think the last one I read was probably the sixth one, that's when my taste in reading shifted. So you can imagine how happy I was to see they finally brought Dav Pilkey's famous series to life, in animation form. Probably for the best because it would be uncomfortable trying to watch a movie featuring a man in his underwear in live action.
This movie, like the book series, is a lot of fun to watch. There are a ton of laughs in this movie. I went to see this with my mother and niece we were watching over for the weekend and had a blast.
The voice cast is suburb. Ed Helms was fantastic as both the mean Principal Krupp and the hilarious Captain Underpants. Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch were great voicing to two pranksters George and Harold. And even Nick Kroll was great voicing the evil Professor Poopypants (yes, that is his name and it is funny). Which by the way, Professor Poopypants was just a great, funny baddie. I loved how his evil plan was to get rid of laughter solely because everyone laughs at his name. Genius!
I guess the only minor drawback I can think of overall is that I wish that there were actual kids voicing the child characters instead of adults but I guess it still worked out well in the end.
The animation is very stylish. Also I loved how they incorporated other animation styles throughout the film. My favorite was when the boys did an imagination sequence using sock puppets. My god, I was just had almost died laughing during that sequence.
And finally I think what this film touches on best was the friendship between the two main characters and the joys of childhood. Keep in mind that Captain Underpants is just a small role in the series. It mainly focuses on George and Harold, as it should. The whole reason for Captain Underpants was because of their friendship, and I think the film touch upon that incredibly well.
Also it kinda takes you back to your childhood and all the fun you might've had. Don't you recall you and your friends just hanging out and laughing and coming up with superheroes, or just having fun overall?
Captain Underpants was definitely the family-fun flick needed for this summer. It's a far better movie to watch over The Mummy any time, but if you go see Wonder Woman over this film, that's okay I can understand. But please do check this film out when you have the chance.
Positives: Negatives:
-Laugh out loud fun -Wish for child actors
-Great animation
-Funny characters
-Top voice acting
-Story of friendship
-Childhood fun
Final Grade: A
So have you seen this movie? What were your thoughts? Have you read the books too? Please be kind, leave a like and comment, and check back for more reviews on Prose!
