Harry Situation’s Countdown Reviews: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...
STAR WARS
EPISODE III
REVENGE OF THE SITH
There have already been two prequels that have left
fans doubting the competence of GEORGE LUCAS.
Many of which have given up on the series completely.
All hopes for this final installment were lost. Then in 2005,
LUCASFILM released a much darker film, with a PG-13 rating.
Did this final prequel give fans a New Hope?
And now we’ve come to the conclusion of the Prequel trilogy with Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Now this one is actually a little different from the last two entries. This one I think many fans can agree is a little more tolerable compared to the rest of the prequels.
This one takes place at the end of the Clone Wars where Anakin and Obi-Wan are renowned war heroes. But when visions of Padme’s death start to haunt young Skywalker, he is desperate to do anything to stop that from happening, even falling towards the dark side. When Palpatine reveals himself as the Sith Lord Darth Sidious Anakin swears his allegiance to him and becomes Darth Vader.
I think many fans can agree that while this film isn’t completely perfect, it truly is the best of the Prequel Trilogy (which isn’t saying much). But George Lucas did deliver us a darker story for the Star Wars franchise. I mean, god damn, this film was heavy. Clones turning against the Jedi, Anakin slicing up younglings, Anakin choking out Padme, shit gets dark here, and I love it.
The special effects, while again looks like everything is 90% CGI, actually looks very polished in this movie. The worlds, the aliens, the space battles, everything looks much better and smoother than the previous installments.
John Williams’ score rocks again, as always. The melody is so much darker and emotional than the other scores he’s done. Hell listen to the track Anakin vs Obi-Wan, it sounds intenese.
And that brings up what really is the best aspect of this film. This is the one where we witness Anakin’s fall to the dark side. Hayden Christensen is actually a little more tolerable in this one. I don’t know what he did to change it up but it worked. The scenes where he isn’t talking but looking more angry are some of the most powerful scenes in Star Wars history. And let’s not forget what everyone wanted to see, the duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan. It is one of the best lightsaber duels put on screen. Some people complained that the fight went on too long but I think it was perfect. These two are the greatest swordsman in the Jedi Order, and this was the duel that was going to change the fate of the galaxy. So it makes sense that this duel would be long.
But of course, this being a prequel, there are notable flaws. Again, the writing is still a bother. “You’re so beautiful.” “Only because I’m so in love.” “No, because I’m so in love with you.” Gag me! Lucas, you’re still no Shakespeare.
Not to mention there’s still no chemistry between Anakin and Padme. You’d think that would improve, but no it’s still nonexistent and shit.
And let’s not forget that Darth Vader meme.
“NNNOOOOOOOOOO!”
Also I’m still confused on the timespan of this. It’s never explained. Padme told Anakin that she was pregnant. The duration of pregnancy is nine months, but the movie made it seem that all of these events went on in the last few days. Has she been hiding that pregnancy in the last nine months from Anakin or something? Or am I honestly to believe that in the Star Wars universe you can get pregnant and give birth to healthy newborns (with no mutations or deformities at all) all in a matter of a few days? Lucas, you wanna explain that?
Revenge of the Sith may not be perfect like the rest of the Prequel Trilogy, but it still is the better of the bunch. I love watching this one over and over like all the rest of the Star Wars films. It helped end an era on a dark note but it gave rise to a new hope just around the corner.
Light Side:
-Darker tone
-Anakin vs Obi-Wan
-Special effects
-John Williams’ score
-Anakin’s fall
-Beginnings of a New Hope
Dark Side:
-Writing still cringy
-Still no chemistry between Anakin & Padme
-Confusing timespan
Final Grade: B
That completes my reviews of the Star Wars Prequels. Now we only have one more entry to do just before The Last Jedi arrives in theaters. That’s right, time to start the Sequel Trilogy with The Force Awakens. I cannot wait to review that!
So there’s my thoughts on Revenge of the Sith. Have you seen it? What were your thoughts on it? Please be kind, leave a like and comment, and check back for more reviews here on Prose!
