Harry Situation Reviews: The Open House
Alright, here's my first official review for 2018. And... well let's just say that January is usually my hibernation month when it comes to film.
The Open House is a new horror film on Netflix and it stars Dylan Minnnette, whom you may recognize from films like Goosebumps, Don't Breathe and the hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. The premise is that a teenage boy (played by Dylan Minnette) and his mother move away after the sudden death of his father. They move into a new, large house and are suddenly besieged by threatening forces. And that's pretty much it...
Alright for those unaware, the month of January is usually my hibernation month. What this means is that there are movies currently in theaters that I have no interests in seeing at all. That could because of me saving my money for something else or I'm just not interested in what is playing. Yeah, I know that critics are saying that Paddington 2 is really, really good (much to my surprise), but I haven't seen the first one and I'll probably wait until it's $5 at the Elks Theater here in Rapid.
But for now I saw something that looked remotely interesting on Netflix that I decided to use my time on instead. Really makes me question what I'm doing with my life.
So I got one thing to say about this film: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
This movie was just a total snoozefest. Based on the trailer, I thought it might have potential. Sadly that potential may have been wasted.
The point of watching a suspense or scary movie is to feel fear. It doesn't work when you feel nothing for it. The "scares" in this flick were scarce. And when they do happen onscreen they're not that scary.
It doesn't help if the film has no originality what so ever. It's your standard home invasion/stalker movie. The problem is you, the audience, have no clue why this stalker is attacking this family.
The characters are super bland too. While the mom and the son do decent performances, but I really had no care for them. They're also stupid too. There's a point where in the movie stuff are moved around, and the mom chews out the son because she thinks he's doing it. It's like come on!
The ending sucks too. It wraps nothing up. You'll feel like you truly wasted your time with it.
So yeah, I really don't have any more to say about this movie. It sucks, it's boring, it's trash. You'd be better off checking out a loud house instead of an open house; which by the way, Loud House just premiered its third season so check it out some time.
Positives:
-Decent performances
Negatives:
-Boring
-No scares
-Stupid/bland characters
-Dumb ending
Final Grade: F
Off to a good start for 2018 movies!
