Harry Situation Reviews: The Titan
On that day, mankind received a grim reminder... that Netflix can also feature boring movies too.
The Titan is a new Netflix science fiction thriller movie starring Sam Worthington, Taylor Schilling, and Tom Wilkinson. The future of the earth is doomed... again. Nuclear fallout, over population, limiting resources, you know how it works. Sam Worthington is an Air Force pilot chosen for a military experiment to create a human being capable of surviving the harsh environments of Saturn’s moon, Titan. While the experiment is successful, there are also deadly side-effects that followed, and the rest of this movie just bored me.
I feel bad for Sam Worthington. He’s honestly a decent actor. Too bad he can’t catch a break since he’s been in one bad film after the other. However I find it weird that Sam Worthington’s character isn’t reacting to all the changes happening to him. Seriously, there’s a moment where pieces of his skin are pealing off and he’s like, “Yeah, whatever.” I’d be freaking my shit if that was happening to me.
The other actors were alright too. You may recognize Taylor Schilling from Orange is the New Black (although I didn’t at first), and I think regardless of how bad a movie may be Tom Wilkinson is still gonna give it his all.
Yet the worst part about it is that you’d think this would be the least bit interesting. It is a film about forced evolution. It’s about trying to turn a human being into something else, and whether or not that’ll bite us in the ass. There’s so much that could be explored from that concept alone. But No! It’s a fucking waste of an hour and a half of your time!
There really isn’t anything that is explored other than Sam Worthington turning into some humanoid creature (which the final product looks like something a rejected contestant from SyFy’s Face Off would make), and how this all affects his family. We don’t learn what’s going on in the outside world during this time, we don’t know the other test subjects conditions other than that they don’t live through the mutations.
And for a film that’s supposed to be a science fiction thriller, I see plenty of science fiction, but I really don’t see any thriller. No suspences builds. Instead, the audience is treated to padding.
I will also state that there was one weird ass moment where Taylor Schilling is trying to talk down Sam Worthington while he is this new humanoid creature in the woods. Then suddenly a helicopter flies by and it transitions to Taylor Schilling lying down with a few cuts and bruises on her head. Tom Wilkinson explains to her that he’s sorry that things got out of hand trying to apprehend Sam Worthington. But I was like what the fuck are you talking about. I had to rewatch that to make sure I didn’t miss something. No, nothing. There’s no explaination how they got Sam Worthington. I’m pretty sure the producers forgot to put that scene into the movie.
I’m sorry if this review feels short and I’m repeating myself. But that’s all I got for you. There’s nothing more I can say about this film. I’ve seen better films about evolution and splicing than this one. Annihilation, which I reviewed two months ago, did a better job handling that topic than this. The Titan is boring as fuck, and you’ll forget about it in the next day or so.
Positives:
-Decent acting
-Interesting concept
Negatives:
-Fucking boring!
-Slow pacing
-Lack of thrills
-Explores nothing
-Overall uninteresting
Final Grade: D-
So that’s my thoughts on Netflix’s The Titan. It sucks, don’t watch it. Please be kind, leave a like and comment, and check out better reviews for better movies once I post them here on Prose!
