Angel
I see her step onto the bridge. She’s on the phone with someone, gesturing wildly as she walks across the road. I’m getting closer and closer.
She’s wearing a red sweater, like the one my sister wears. She has a thin scarf arund her neck. She’s young, and she’s beautiful.
I’m wondering why she doesn’t cross the road. She’s just standing there, talking. Her face is pale.
I’m getting closer and closer. My car is fast and speedy, and I wrestle with the wheel to slow down so that she has more time to reach the pavement.
But she doesn’t move.
And then I know I’m going to hit, I’m going to crash. I can see her falling as the car hits her. But I can’t bear it.
I wrench the wheel to the left. The car careens sideways and breaks through the flimsy barrier, and then I’m falling.
The water is coming closer and closer. She sees me inside, smiling at her.
Then the car hits the water with enough momentum to flatten it, and the world goes black.
It’s shining, everything’s shining. I’m floating.
I see the girl below, and she’s looking up at me. I am light, I am air, but she can see me.
Tears make her eyes shine as she mouths, Angel. You’re my guardian angel.
And I am light,I am a falling star, but I smile.
