Harry Situation’s Countdown Reviews: Aliens vs Predator: Requiem
Ooooh boy... this one...
Aliens vs Predator: Requiem is the 2007 science fiction horror sequel to the hit Alien vs Predator movie, and it sucks. Immediately taking place after the events of the first film (spoiler alert), a Predalien, an Alien with the features of a Predator, chestburster punches its way out of the dead predator from the last film, kills a couple of Predators, and forces a Predator ship to crash land into Colorado. Next thing you know, we have a small town being ransacked by the Aliens and a lone Predator, and we have this Predalien loose, and once again it all sucks.
What sucks about it? Well for starters, this movie is pretty dark. I'm not talking about in theme or tone, I mean you cannot see jack shit in this movie. I'm serious. It's like someone turned down the brightness on every screen across the world. I remember first seeing this movie with my father, and at some point in the movie it was either him or I that leaned to the other and asked, "Can you see anything?" to which, one of us answered, "No!"
Who seriously thought that was a good idea? The sad thing is that when you look closely, you can tell that there are some good looking designs for the creatures. But unfortunately, it's still hard to make anything out. You see that picture you see above that features a glimpse of the Predalien? See how brightly lit it is so you can get a good look at the new monster? That's from a production photo. That's the only lighting you're ever going to get from this movie.
Now let's talk about the other big issue about this movie: the fucking violence. The first AVP was rated PG-13, and now this one is rated R. Again, I don't mind graphic violence, especially in a science fiction horror film featuring the Alien and Predator. But I don't fucking need to see a chestburster burst out of a young kid's chest, or a scene where the Predalien implants alien embryos inside a pregnant woman, only for her stomach to explode full of chestbursters eating her fetus. That's just fucking gross!
Let's talk about the characters now. I don't know who any of these actors are, and I sure as hell didn't care about any of them. It looks like they hired the most random ass extras they could find from other movies, and just decided to cast them in this movie, giving them false hopes they'll be big stars some day. All this time I was looking at the buffet menu for the Aliens and the Predator. The only two people I recognized was the blond girl (played by Kristen Hager) and her ex-boyfriend (played by David Paetkau). I only recognize them because they starred in better things. Kristen Hager went on to star as Nora in Being Human and David Paetkau went on to star as Sam in Flashpoint.
Also, it never hit me until I watch Chris Stuckmann's review video of this movie. He made a major point about this movie that I never realized before. But now that I rewatched the movie, I finally noticed it myself. The studio turn Alien and Predator into a teen slasher movie. Oh... my... balls...
How could they do this? Turning two beloved monster films into a B-movie slasher film you'd find inside of a Walmart movie bin. Say what you want about The Last Jedi, but this is utterly disgraceful to both the Alien and Predator series.
Now to be fair, the scenes where the lone Predator is doing his thing are the best moments in this movie. I'm willing to argue that the Predator in this movie (named Wolf by the production team) is the best character in this whole movie. And the scenes where the Predator is fighting the Aliens and the Predalien are cool, when you can see them.
Also, I have to admit that the film score is one of the better things in this movie. The score was done by Brian Tyler, another underrated score composer who does great work not only in movies, but also in television and video games.
Other than that, I don't have much else to say than AVPR is a bad movie. It dishonors the legacy of both Alien and Predator and should only be watched if you're truly bored with your day.
Positives:
-The Predator
-The film score
Negatives:
-Too fucking dark
-Generic, bland characters
-Senseless violence and gore
-Made into a slasher film
Final Grade: D
Well that's my review for Aliens vs Predator: Requiem. Only one more movie to go over for my countdown reviews before The Predator hits theaters. So, have you seen this movie? What were your thoughts? Do you wish that there was a better AVP film? Please be kind, leave a like and comment, and check out more reviews here on Prose!
