Broken Wings
She lay there trapped
Beneath a dried leaf
Beside a twig
Wet
And alone
With her light
Her own light
That shone from her heart
Burning out.
She used to be a wanderer
Through night and day.
She used to fly
Wings spread, free and gay.
She travelled through the forests
Over the plains
Across the water
Never tired
Never paused
Until that one fateful day.
On a dawn so beautiful
With light reflecting
From the dew drops
Like sparkling crystals,
She was skipping
From leaf to leaf
Lost in her thoughts
When she first saw him.
A human boy
A face so kind
With a warm smile as he slept.
Such a peaceful face, she'd thought.
She perched on a branch
And watched him from afar.
The boy came every day
And she watched him from afar
She smiled when the boy smiled
Frowned when he frowned
She admired him
And she knew she loved him.
She was aware
Of the frightening myth
Among the fairies,
That if fairies fall in love they die,
But she didn't care anymore.
The boy was all that mattered
She devoted
Her remaining breath
To watch the boy
To wish him joy
Until one day
The boy stopped coming.
So, as she lay there trapped
Beneath the dried leaf
Beside the twig
Though alone
She was not lonely.
For her heart
Was filled with the boy.
Her light was burning out
But it didn't matter,
Cause her face showed not
The tiniest bit of sorrow.
Beautiful, she thought to herself
As her light burned out
Into the darkness.
