Forever

used to be a long time.

When I was young

and starry-eyed

it meant

as long as I live

and that seemed

an eternity.

But as the years pass,

a lifetime grows shorter.

Far too short

it seems

to encompass

how long

I will love you

or even

how long

I already have.

When I was young

no longer

it meant

when time ceases to exist

when I am no longer me

but rather dust and ashes

at one with the stars

in the night sky

when time no longer exists

my love

will be still

as things we cannot

touch

feel

taste

or hear

often are

long after

we are not.
