Chapter 7- Moving In
Jack decided to go on and hire someone to come out and fix the house for them so they wouldn't have to. Ted still insisted he do all the electrical work for them since he felt more comfortable knowing he'd do the job right the first time, unlike some of those other electricians who cut corners. Jack borrowed Rhonda's dad's tractor to work on the land, and her dad offered to help as well whenever he wasn't busy with his hay business. It took a little over three months to get everything looking good and making it livable again. Everyone could hardly sleep a wink the night before from the excitement of their big day in the morning. They all finally one by one fell asleep and woke up ready to start their move into their new rebuilt, beautiful home.
Breakfast was served and the packing began, but luckily most of their stuff was already loaded on the trailer from last night. None of them except Ted had seen the inside of the house all finished since they wanted it to be a surprise.
Everyone loaded up into their vehicles, Jack, Diane and the kids in the truck with the trailer; and Ted and Rhonda following behind in the car. As they drove down the driveway the excitement grew in everyone until they thought they would explode. They made it to the house and parked the vehicles as they all got out and stared in amazement at their newly fixed home. "It's so beautiful, I can't believe this is the same house that we first looked at three months ago!" said Diane astonished just staring at the house. "Yep, it's all ours now baby doll! As bad as I wanted to though, I haven't went inside because I wanted to see it the same time as you. All I've seen is the land since I've been fixing that up along with your grandfather Richard." "Well, you both have done such a beautiful job! I can't believe how good it looks!" said Diane still in awe. "Well, let's all go inside and get you all settled! Plus I want to see what the inside looks like," Rhonda winked. "This is such a huge house mommy, what if I get lost?" Scotty said a little apprehensive looking at the house. She knelt on one knee and said comforting, "You'll be fine sweetie. It'll take some time getting used to learning all the different rooms and floors, but you both will be just fine." "Let's go inside daddy, I want to see my new room!" said Penny all excited tugging on Jack's hand and pulling him towards the house. "Ok ok," Jack giggled, "let's all go on inside and see how it looks!" "Me first me first!" yelled Scotty as he ran past everyone towards the front door and opened it. "Oh my gosh, the kitchen is beautiful!" gasped Diane as she stared around the room." "You've definitely got plenty of room in here that's for sure." said Rhonda. "C'mon Penny, let's go upstairs and pick out our new bedrooms!" Scotty smiled as he took her hand. "Okay Scotty, let's go!" Penny said smiling back at her brother. The kids made their way upstairs together, and once they made it to the second floor they both split up and took off in opposite directions running down the hall ways. Meanwhile, the rest of the family was downstairs still admiring the rest of the first floor which included a good-sized living room, two bathrooms, a large study, two guest bedrooms, both with king beds suits and a screened in porch area. The second floor included a master bedroom, two other regular sized bedrooms, a playroom for the kids, one full bathroom, a study, an outside small deck and a spiral staircase which led up to the half story which was for storage. Scotty took the room on the left and Penny took the right.
For the rest of the day up until the evening everyone helped with getting the furniture pieces into their proper rooms and stuff put away. The kids' boxes were brought up to their rooms and Penny and Scotty were excited putting away their things and making the rooms their own.
Scotty was on the bed playing with his toys when Penny walked into the room. She stood in the doorway for a few seconds until Scotty looked up to see his sister. "Penny are you okay?" he asked a little puzzled. She walked into the room and climbed onto the bed and sat quietly close to her brother. "Penny what's wrong?" he anxiously questioned while placing his hand on her shoulder. "If I tell you, you have to promise not to tell anyone." she said while looking up at her brother with tear filled eyes. "I promise, now tell me." he said eagerly. "I saw something in my closet while I was playing on my bed. It looked like a scary man's face." "Are you sure you wasn't seeing things?" "I don't know. Maybe our new big house has me a little scared or something." she said while wiping her eyes. Scotty hugged his sister and said, "It's okay, I'm a little nervous too. We've never had our own rooms before, but if it would make you feel better we can still share a room." "No it's okay, I probably didn't see anything." She smiled, "You're such a good big brother Scotty, I love you." "I love you too, now go on and play." She hopped off the bed, looked back at her brother and smiled again as she walked out of his room to go back to hers. After she left he sat there thinking to himself if she really did see "the man in the closet" and felt a little worried for his sister. Why would she make up something like that, let alone her tearing up about it. Those certainly weren't fake tears, and she hardly cries about anything anyways unless it's something serious.
The rest of the family had left a while ago, and the kids heard their mom call them down to dinner. The kids ran down and sat at the table with their parents. "So, your first night in your very own rooms, are you excited?" asked Jack digging through the boxes to find a piece of pizza that had all the meats on it. The kids both looked at one another wondering if one another would say anything about their previous talk. Diane noticed their looks, but didn't want to say anything about it. She would keep a mental note to pay attention to them a bit more to figure out what it was they were keeping quiet. "Are you both a little nervous about it being your first night in your own rooms?" she asked. "No." They both said in sync while shaking their heads quickly. Diane slightly giggled into her cup while taking a drink. "You know, if you both would rather share a room for a while until you're ready you can." "Honey they're fine, they'll enjoy it." said Jack about to take another bite of pizza and giving her a look. "We'll have to get you both registered for school in a few days." she said changing the subject. "That'll be a bit scary not knowing anyone there." said Penny. "You'll both be fine, and you'll make new friends. It'll be fun having sleepovers here won't it?" Their mother said smiling. They finished supper and the kids headed upstairs to brush their teeth and get into their pajamas.
