Tidal Wave
Inogen felt her hands sweating as Harriet held hers. It was weird, only three days our of her coma, she'd fallen so hard and deeply for this woman. Her stomach was churning as they walked towards her house. The date was coming to a close, and Imogen wasn't ready to end it. She could tell Harriet had been trying hard to help her remember. From dinner at what she was told was her favorite restaurant to watching a movie, Harriet had done her best to evoke some thoughts from Imogen, but all Imogen could think of was that Harriet was cute and how she wished she remember.
They neared Inogen's house where her sister was waiting at the door. Harriet was looking at the ground. It was almost the moment that they were going to kiss. It had been months since Harriet had tasted Imogen's strawberry chapstick, and she missed it greatly. The two neared the doorway when they heard the squeal. Imogen's heart leapt into her throat. She looked back and the blue Honda Civic was speeding towards them again. She tensed and felt Harriet's hand let go. Before she should react, she was hurled to the dirt, and Harriet was gone.
Imogen blinked hard as the headlights returned. They neared and neared until her whole mind was flooded with bright white light. She felt light, then confused, then completely numb. She blinked again, and she was wearing a white gown. Harriet was there, but she looked different. Her hair was in cornrows, and she wore a black hoodie and sweatpants. Her make-up was gone, and her cheeks were soft and red from crying. At the sight of Imogen, she dropped something small in her hands and ran to her.
"Genie!" she whispered, pulling her into her arms.
"What happened?"
"The car-- I couldn't stop it."
Tears were streaming down Harriet's eyes. Imogene hugged her and she broke down.
"Its okay. It isn't your fault."
Imogen could feel Harriet's heart as she hugged her. She saw the shiny metal on the ground and kissed Harriet's forehead.
"You can't stay with me."
"I know."
"Why would you--"
"I couldn't live without you, babe. They never found the bastard that did it. It broke me."
"I know."
"When do I have to go?"
"Whenever you let me go."
Harriet smirked. "Guess we'll be here for awhile."
