Friends with Benefits
The secret conversation begins
As we ask our question behind the computer screen
What is that your looking for?
What is it that you desire?
You imagine the look of the person on the other side
As they contemplate the answer to provide
The silent pause as time goes by
Watching the screen for a hoped reply
You envision the person’s shoulder shrug
The message appears slow as a slug
“FWB????” Is what appears
This has really pricked up the virtual ears
Benefits of what sorts you ask
Time to find out is now the task
What is that two strangers can do
That would seem mutually beneficial to you
You know what it is you’re looking for
But behind the question is so much more
The smile that quickly appeared upon your face
Slowly fades as your mind and heart begin to race
The question has been asked so many times before
And it as always ended in a slamming door
The fingers type out your reply
“What sort of benefits and tell me why?
Will the answer be what you seek?
You shrink in you chair mild and meek
Will it be the same today?
“A meeting somewhere but you have to pay”
“I have bills and you have needs”
“This can be beneficial” you dishearteningly read
Not the answer you were hoping for
The term ‘friends’ mean so much more
Companionship is what you desire
A conversation that could start a fire
When it come to the casual type
For me it’s nothing more than hype
No getting to know the other one?
Wham, bam thank you ma’am , you’re done?
The benefits that you’re looking for
Is not just a hookup but so much more
To know the person, to read the face
Every emotion in its place
Knowing what’s up and knowing what’s down
When you see the face with a smile or frown
Companionship at it’s best
A place for a weary heart to rest
Never daring to cross that line
Eyes wide open knowing the person will never be mine
Wishing for nothing more but a sliver of their time
Sharing a cup of coffee or a margarita with a lime
Idle chat or passionate prose
Let’s just see where the conversation goes
These are the benefits that you have with a friend
Something you feel should not come to an end
And even though you know you must go
Walking away one more time, it must be so
But the lingering smile sits right there
Holding its place because you know they care
Finally you see that the answer is fraught
With a reply you really should not
Exposing the heart for them to see
A “FWB” was not meant to be
As the message is sent you gently decline
“Thanks anyway, but I think I’m fine”
