Equality
As with the root of the word, it should be equal. Everyone should get the same chance to prove themselves and based on that should be chosen or not. Ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual identification, should be not be found in the hiring process or any other process for that matter. In a perfect world, all would be judged on ability alone, the best person for the job gets it. This does not mean that everyone has the same ability or opportunity as this isn't realistic for any people group. However, should the opportunity arise, I believe everyone deserves a purely merit-based process. Because in the end if you hire someone based on any of the criteria mentioned above, no matter on which side you fall, it isn't a truly equal process. I don't believe it will ever be possible, but if we could just get to that point then no one would ever have to guess if they didn't get hired for one reason or another, they would know it was purely based on ability and nothing else.
