christmas spirit: capitalist brainwashing or a memento of ancient times?
to me, christmas - and the act of gift giving, wrapping, and placing a child's behavior into the hands of a mysterious, far off man who watches them 24/7 to determine whether this behavior deserves a good or bad reward - is rather deceptive and not all true to the 'spirit of christmas'.
it actually has me rather concerned that we have normalized being monitored constantly, and that we overlook the egregious human rights abuses of major corporations in the 'spirit of christmas'.
please, write to me what the spirit of christmas is to you. this can be an essay, a poem, a joke, a memoir - any input will be a well-received gift :D
I grew up not believing in Santa; we never left out cookies for a magic fat man to come down our chimney to surprise us with gifts and joy! It was just another day. The only holiday spirit I experienced was on TV where I wistfully watched fictitious families merrily gather around a beautifully adorned tree, unwrapping presents of all shapes and sizes. Christmas was a day of longing, not for trees or gifts or Santa Claus but for a family who loved each other enough to want to be in the same room; where there's no fighting, no yelling, no blaming, just here--together--laughing and loving.
