Unrequited Fate
I delve into literature to escape the pains the world bestows upon me
But more often then not, I experience another variety of emotion
That comes and goes with each different page
The burden of another is put upon me
Except I am just a spectator
With no means to make a change
Today I stumbled upon a rather tragic tale
Filled with collusion, lies and deceit
But it wasn't the schemes that hurt the most
It was the transient innocence that comes and goes
I met a couple
Through another person's eyes
And stayed by their side
Through every high and low
But right from the get go
It was very clear to me
That this budding couple
Just wasn't meant to be
Such a heartfelt connection
Would not
Could not
And surely failed to last
In an infernal court of political greed
He promised her the world
And his words echoed true
During what seemed to be her final hours
She lay in bed with dismay
But he came to her rescue
Her general in shining armor
Offering the antidote
To the malady that troubled her so
But in the end, he perished in the snowfall
A hauntingly beautiful scene
Fill with miles and miles of white ethereal sheen
Alas, who was there with her to witness the scenery?
It was just me
Muted and unseen
Unable to offer condolences or comfort
Through a flimsy ink etched sheet
My heart broke
Not for myself
But for two people I never met
Whose fate left me quite upset
And yet I can say with utmost certainty
They're people I know
I've seen them through all their highs
And endured every low
Love's sorrow isn't always one sided on a person's end
Sometimes it's unrequited despite the connection
Because fate pries apart kindred souls
Leaving them aching and hollow
