Broken, too
I remember it.
You were going to renew your vows.
She told you to buy two wedding bands--
One for you, and one for her.
There was hardly anyone there.
She skipped a few steps,
Putting on a bit more makeup,
Taking care of her hair like she had never done before,
and I saw everything.
You did not go to buy the rings until the last day,
She tried not to be angry.
She was usually a spitfire,
Hardheaded, never afraid to show anyone her opinion,
But with you, it was a bit different.
You came home,
Barely before the time you should depart,
With two silver bands,
I felt apprehensive, as if I was watching something heartbreaking.
She opened the envelop you brought with you,
Tried the ring on,
And it did not fit.
I saw it.
The moment she realized that you--
That she was nothing to you anymore.
I saw it too.
The way you got visibly confused,
Why did she pull her face like that? You probably wondered.
"I love your dad, you know." She once said to me.
"If I do not love him, why would I stick with him through everything like this?"
"If it were someone else, they probably would have left."
You heard that.
You made an annoyed face.
And then,
At that exact moment,
I heard it.
I think my heart got broken too.
