It's not as cold as you thought it'd be. You'd seen the movies, it always looked like the only material they used was metal that never saw the light of day, so the inmates would be in perpetual cold. But here, there's some bare amenities that are helping, you are a human after all. The always perceived the guards to be rude and narcissistic towards you, but again, you're as human as they are, just on the opposite sides of the bars. You crack a joke about the jumpsuit you're in, wishing it was orange like in the movie, and you see them allow themselves to smile.
You have a bed, it's not fit for a king but it suffices. You have to be in your sad bedroom by a certain time at night, and you arrived to the prison right as they sent everyone to bed. When morning comes, you expected them to wake everyone up by banging their batons along the bars, but it's not nearly as annoying as that. They make you get to the cafeteria before the food runs out, there's a hint of thoughtfulness that you know they won't admit. After you eat, the yard and what passes for fun is open to you. You can mingle with the other inmates within reason, and you always see someone getting dragged off due to being just a little too rowdy, but it's usually the same person.
At the end of the day, most of there inmates are legitimately kind. It's hard to be haughty when you're all in jail, so for the most part, you don't have to worry about the others unless you did something unspeakable, especially if it involves kids.
You'll be here for a while, but when all is said and done, its not the hell you thought it'd be.
