Secret Salvation
The first day I was green,
And no one gave me heed.
Just another neophyte
Scratching at a need.
Next day, more familiar,
I made a few new friends.
Could I be an acolyte
Leading to their ends?
Weeks went by. Trust took root.
And I was one of them.
Time was nigh for sacrifice
Fuel for such a femme.
One that had no blemish,
No stain upon her soul.
I knew the one they searched for,
One to pay the toll.
She was my one and true,
Although she didn’t know.
I had loved her from afar,
Longed to be her beau.
With horror and chagrin,
I watched them drag her in
And bind her to the altar
Prepared for their sin.
At once I knew my plan.
She couldn’t lose her life.
I boldly spoke out loudly
Taking hold the knife.
At first they thought it strange,
This newbie with the blade,
But culpability burns
So they stepped aside.
She screamed as I drew near,
Because she couldn’t see
The man who threatened her was
Not a fiend but me.
I spoke the magic words
And twirled upon my heel.
Frolicking in the firelight
Poised to seal the deal.
I raised the blade on high
And showed my face to her.
Knowing looks, shared and taken.
The knife became a blur.
Slicing down, missing flesh
Paring the strands of rope
Screams that were full of despair
Turned to cries of hope.
Before they could discern
The purpose of my plot,
I grabbed her like a fireman
Out the door I got.
Their cries of “Infidel”
Still ringing in my ear,
I ran on with my fair prize
’Til they were not near.
They don’t like to be fooled,
Those denizens of night.
My love and I keep running.
Never ends our flight.
I live in love, and so
My life is full and bright.
Living and always running
With my one true light.
