Fireman
My fire pager disturbed my sleep
I peeked out the window, to see why it beeped
A big red fire truck ventured out into the night
I watched it pass by with its flashing red light
Just then an old memory came to mind
I was a child, around eight or nine
When I grow up, I want to be a fireman, I thought
From that moment on, I was forever caught
Fighting fires and saving lives was the life for me
Never imagined life in a wheelchair is my destiny
This is no way for a fire fighter to live
Not when I have so much more I want to give
So now I sit and watch the big red truck go by
While an uncontrollable tear or two floods my eye
With the Captain’s spot filled, there’s no need for me
Reasons to keep on living are hard to see
No one wants a fire fighter who is lame
I’ve lost my dream, to fight the flame
If I go to Heaven when I die
I hope to give firefighting, another try
