The bite for kindness
We were sitting in the tree like we did every summer. Just me and my cousin. Nothing could go wrong. Then the neighbor came out onto her porch. We had dubbed her 'the mean lady' when we were seven and eight. She crossed the yard and came into the woods. She didn't stop until she was standing below us. At that point my heart was threatening to burst out of my throat, we hadn't called her mean for nothing, even little kids have their reasons. "Any reason you girls are on my property?" She asked, her voice was innocent enough but my cousin and I both very well knew she couldn't be trusted. Then we said something very intelligent like "um uh no uh sorry yeah..." Then we jumped out of the tree and ran back to the safety of our grandparents backyard. Just for the record, that wasn't her property! I was mad. I also felt guilty. We should have explained what the heck we were doing! I decided to walk next door and explain myself. My cousin stayed behind. At the time I thought she was being a coward. Now, I don't blame her. The walkway up to her porch took eternity. Or maybe a few seconds. When I finally got to the brick porch I knocked. I practiced what I was going to say in my head while I waited. Finally I heard jingling from around the corner of the house. Two big dogs with gold fur, pointy ears and big teeth came around the corner. Oh yeah did I mention that she has dogs? That could be important. At first I was as stiff as the brick porch I was standing on. Then, I remembered reading somewhere that dogs could smell fear. I loosened up and smiled trying to act calm. At first the dogs just smelled me, I let them. Then they started jumping on me, they were big and I'm short so I wasn't cool with that but I stayed calm anyway. Then they started barking and one tried to bite me. I knew my only choice was to run. It was an insane idea they could outrun me no problem! But it was my only choice. I leaped of the porch and took off running.
The doctor at the emergency care said the bite should heal up fast even though my leg would be sore for a while because the tooth tore a tissue layer. The scratches on my back weren't to deep so they would be okay too. She told me I was lucky. If the dog had managed to pin me down then the bite would be much deeper. I left feeling sore worn out and just confused.
The bite did close up quickly like the doctor said, but it left a scar. A little puncture mark on my thigh, reminding me of the bite for kindness
