These low-tech and low-margin parts - made from wire

LONDON/BERLIN (Reuters) - The humble wire harness, a cheap component that bundles cables together, has become an unlikely scourge of the auto industry. Some predict it could hasten the downfall of combustion cars.

Supplies of the auto part were choked by the war in Ukraine, which is home to a significant chunk of the world's production, with wire harnesses made there fitted in hundreds of thousands of new vehicles every year.

These low-tech and low-margin parts - made from wire, plastic and rubber with lots of low-cost manual labour - may not command the kudos of microchips and motors, yet cars can't be built without them.

The supply crunch could accelerate the plans of some legacy auto firms to switch to a new generation of lighter, machine-made harnesses designed for electric vehicles, according to interviews with more than a dozen industry players and experts.

"This is just one more rationale for the industry to make the transition to electric quicker," said Sam Fiorani, head of production forecasting firm AutoForecast Solutions.

Gasoline cars still account for the bulk of new car sales globally; EVs doubled to 4 million last year, but still only comprised 6% of vehicle sales, according to data from JATO Dynamics.

Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida told Reuters that supply-chain disruptions such as the Ukraine crisis had prompted his company to talk to suppliers about shifting away from the cheap-labour wire harness model.

In the immediate term, though, automakers and suppliers have shifted harness production to other lower-cost countries.

Mercedes-Benz was able to fly in harnesses from Mexico to plug a brief supply gap, according to a person familiar with its operations. Some Japanese suppliers are adding capacity in Morocco, while others have sought new production lines in countries including Tunisia, Poland, Serbia and Romania.

THE TESLA MODEL

Harnesses for fossil-fuel cars bundle together cables stretching up to 5 km (3.1 miles) in the average vehicle, connecting everything from seat heaters to windows. They are labour-intensive to make, and almost every model's is unique, so shifting production is hard to do quickly.

The supply disruptions in Ukraine were a rude awakening for the auto industry. Carmakers and suppliers said that early in the war, plants remained open only thanks to the determination of workers there, who kept a reduced flow of parts moving in the face of power cuts, air-raid warnings and curfews.

Adrian Hallmark, CEO of Bentley, said the British luxury carmaker had initially feared losing 30-40% of its car production for 2022 due to a harness shortage.

"The Ukraine crisis threatened to close our factory fully for several months, much longer than we did for COVID."

Hallmark said finding alternative production sources was complicated by the fact the conventional harnesses themselves had 10 different parts from 10 different suppliers in Ukraine.

He added that the supply problems had sharpened Bentley's focus and investment on developing a simple harness for EVs that will be run by a central computer. The carmaker, a division of Volkswagen, plans a fully-electric lineup by 2030.

"The Tesla model, which is a completely different concept of wiring, we couldn't change to that overnight," Hallmark added. "It's a fundamental change in the way that we design cars."

The new generation of wire harnesses, used by electric natives like Tesla, can be made in sections on automated production lines and are lighter, a key factor because reducing an EV's weight is crucial for extending range.

Many of the executives and experts interviewed said fossil-fuel cars, which face looming bans in Europe and China, would not be around long enough to justify redesigns to allow them to use next-generation harnesses.

"I wouldn't put a penny into internal combustion engines now," said Michigan-based auto consultant Sandy Munro, who estimates EVs will make up half of global new car sales by 2028.

"The future is coming up awful fast."

'CHANGE OF PARADIGM'

Walter Glück, head of Leoni's harness business, said the supplier was working with carmakers on new, automated solutions for wire harnesses in EVs.

Leoni is focusing on zonal or modular harnesses, which would be split into six to eight parts, short enough for automation in assembly and reducing complexity.

"It's a change of paradigm," Glück said. "If you want to reduce production time in your car factory, a modular wire harness helps."

Among automakers, BMW is also looking at using modular wire harnesses, requiring fewer semiconductors and less cable, which would save space and make them lighter, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

The person, who declined to be named as they not authorized to speak publicly, said the new harnesses would also make it easier to upgrade vehicles wirelessly - an area Tesla now dominates.

CelLink, a Californian-based startup, has developed an entirely automated, flat and easy-to-install "flex harness", and raised $250 million earlier this year from companies including BMW and auto suppliers Lear Corp and Robert Bosch.

CEO Kevin Coakley would not identify customers but said CelLink's harnesses had been installed in close to a million EVs.

Only Tesla has that scale, but the carmaker did not respond to a request for comment.

Coakley said CelLink's new $125 million factory under construction in Texas will have 25 automated production lines which will be able switch different designs in around 10 minutes because the components are produced from digital files.

The company is working on EVs with a number of carmakers and looking at building another plant in Europe, he said.

While the lead time for changing a conventional wire harness can be up to 26 weeks, Coakley said his company could ship redesigned products in two weeks.

That kind speed is what legacy carmakers are looking for as they go electric, said Dan Ratliff, a principal at Detroit-based venture capital firm Fontinalis Partners, which was founded by Ford Chairman Bill Ford and has invested in CelLink.

For decades, the industry has not needed to move fast to rethink a part like the wire harness, but Tesla has changed that, Ratliff added.

"On the EV side, it's just go, go, go."

The genetic disorder causes developmental delays, learning disabilities

A court in the U.K. has named a sperm donor who had offered his services on social media to lesbian women without informing them he had an inheritable condition.

James MacDougall, 37, fathered fifteen children to these women knowing he had fragile-X syndrome, the Daily Mail reports.

The genetic disorder causes developmental delays, learning disabilities, and social and behavior problems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children with the condition may also have an intellectual disability.

MacDougall’s name and actions were released Monday in family court. He had attempted to have access to four of the children he fathered.

He had previously signed paperwork agree that he did not want to contact some of the children he fathered, according to the Daily Mail.

Three mothers had opposed MacDougall’s attempts. The children, the tabloid reports, are between three years old to a few months old.

On Monday, Judge Nathalie Lieven — known as Mrs. Justice Lieven — ruled against MacDougall, deciding that he should not have parental responsibilities.

Lieven also made the unusual move to name him, in what she said would hopefully make other women aware of what he’s done and stop them from using him as a sperm donor.

She said naming him was “a very specific benefit in him being named in the hope that women will look him up on the internet and see this judgment,” according to The Guardian.

“The usual approach of anonymity in the family courts should not be used as a way for parents to behave in an unacceptable manner and then hide behind the cloak of anonymity,” she said, according to the Daily Mail.

During the court proceedings, lawyers revealed that MacDougall elected to be a sperm donor even though he could not go through a regular clinic due to his condition.

In some legal agreements, MacDougall does list his condition, but without explaining it.

“Although the agreement does refer to fragile-X, [MacDougall] took no steps to explain the condition to [the women] and no steps to ensure they understood. [He] took advantage of these young women’s vulnerability and their strong desire to have children,” Lieven said in her ruling. “This failure to take responsibility for his own condition and to have any apparent concern for the long-term impact both on the mothers and potentially the children, is a factor in concluding that [he] should not be given parental responsibility for the children.”

The chain has its headquarters in Florida, which is where I first tried it many years ago. On a recent trip back, I wanted to give it another try to see how it stood up to some other fast-food chains I've tried recently.

I’m a student, not a threat,” Reno High School junior Lucas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A high school honors student in Nevada said in federal court that he’s being bullied by students and harassed by campus administrators who search him for a gun every time someone identifies him on a state hotline that invites anonymous reports of school threats.

“I’m a student, not a threat,” Reno High School junior Lucas Gorelick, 16, told The Associated Press on Friday. “I have rights. I want people to know what is happening, and I want to ensure safety for all future students.”

A lawsuit filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Reno argues school district officials have violated his constitutional rights to equal protection and freedom from unreasonable search and seizure.

He said his backpack and pickup truck were searched five times in two weeks based on anonymous tips, but no weapon was found. He also noted he has been the target of other incidents he termed “bullying situations” that he traced to his Jewish heritage, his work with Democratic party candidates and his school achievements.

Gorelick is identified by his initials in the lawsuit. The teen, his father, Jeff Gorelick, and their attorney Luke Busby agreed in separate telephone interviews to allow AP to report his name.

Jeff Gorelick characterized a state Department of Education hotline called SafeVoice — established in 2017 after approval from the Legislature — as “an unthinking system” that grants anonymity to bullies.

The father compared using the system to say his son has a gun on campus to “swatting,” or hoax police calls that send authorities to an innocent person’s home. Jeff Gorelick, who owns hunting rifles, said his son does not have a key to the gun safe or own guns of his own.

It was not immediately clear Friday whether students in other states with similar tip hotlines have been targeted in the same way.

Relying on anonymous calls "gives people free rein to do abusive things to other people,” Jeff Gorelick said. “If the purpose is to provide safe schools, which I think was the intended purpose, having a little bit of control on abuse would have been a good idea.”

In a Wednesday court hearing the day after an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two teachers in a rural Texas school shooting, U.S. District Chief Judge Miranda Du in Reno declined to issue an immediate order telling school administrators to stop the searches.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1985 in a case from New Jersey that school officials need only “reasonable suspicion” that a student has violated the law or school rules to initiate a search. The Fourth Amendment requires “probable cause” or a warrant.

Gorelick's lawsuit remains active, although he will graduate next month, a year early.

Du referred in comments from the bench to school violence, saying the Washoe County School District need not stop the searches even if prior threat reports were proved false, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.

School district attorney Neil Rombardo told the judge that campus administrators had a duty to take tips seriously to protect the safety of the 1,600 students at Reno High, and that SafeVoice had not determined tips about Lucas Gorelick were an abuse of the system, the newspaper said.

“Which one do we not believe?” Rombardo asked, referring to tips received.

Rombardo did not immediately respond Friday to messages from AP.

Lucas Gorelick cited other examples of harassment that included his home and truck being vandalized and swastika graffiti being left on his vehicle.

Gorelick campaigned for President Joe Biden; is a campaign finance intern for U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto; and is involved in the campaign of school board trustee Adam Mayberry.

He served on a school safety committee, has spoken at school board meetings, and is a member of Students Demand Action, a national group aiming to end gun violence in schools. He said he intends to attend college. He did not specify which one.

The Nevada Department of Education said in written statements that every SafeVoice tip is “processed, taken with all seriousness and viewed as valid.”

Department spokeswoman Allegra Demerjian declined additional comment Friday.

SafeVoice data is confidential under state law, the statement said, but a continuing “false tip sequence” can trigger a Nevada State Police investigation and disclosure of the identity of the reporting person.

“If you continue to misuse the system you may no longer be anonymous and there are potential consequences,” the statement said. It did not say if there was an investigation of Gorelick’s case.
