Escaping the Madhouse
Escaping the Madhouse
I yawned and stretched my arms. “Today is the day Toby!” I sit up and look over at him, “I am going to get out of here.”
“Come get breakfast,” Mrs. Rachel calls. I always loved that name, it was my mom’s name. I walked to the dining hall and took a seat at the table. My meds were already waiting for me. I only take them so that the nurse will put chocolate chips on my pancakes. As I waited for my pancakes I overheard the nurses talking.
“Rob I am telling you he needs a different medication he’s getting worse.”
Rob is our other nurse, he never listens to Rachel, but I don’t blame him. They always have something to fight about. Toby and I think that it’s very unprofessional, but we don’t say anything.
The nurse brought out my pancakes and then went back into the kitchen. Then came back with Toby’s pancake. Toby only gets one pancake but he never eats it, honestly, I don’t know how he’s never hungry. I can already taste the homemade syrup and chocolate chips. Sometimes Rob will sit with us and drink his coffee before clocking out, but today he was in a hurry. He works night shifts but always seems tired. That’s okay though. I look over at Toby who hasn’t touched his pancakes.
“Hey, Toby you want to get out of here with me?” I whispered so the nurses wouldn’t hear us. He didn’t answer but I kept talking. “Look I’m going to need your help okay? You’ll have to distract the nurses while I make a run for it.”
“Hi, honey do you need anything to drink?” Mrs.Rachel asked.
“No thank you, Mrs.Rachel, Toby does though.”
“Alright,” she sighed and filled his cup with water, then walked back into the kitchen.
I ate the last piece of my pancakes and went back to my room. I listened to my clock. Tik tik tok tik tik tok. Before I knew it, it was time for my night meds. I went to the dining hall to take them. Mrs. Rachel was chopping vegetables for our dinner. I snuck a veggie into my mouth.
“Hey buddy how are you feeling today?” It was Rob. “Listen, I went to see Dr. Linza today. She prescribed a new medication for you to try.”
“No. I don’t want a new one. I want to leave.”
“But honey this is your home why wou-” Mrs. Rachel joined in.
“Rachel stop let me talk to him.”
“This is a madhouse NOT my home!” I scream while tears run down my face.
“The only thing that’s mad is you!”
“Gregory please don’t do this. Just sit down and let’s talk.” I tried to run but Rob had a tight grip on my arm.
I grabbed the first thing my hand touched and used it to separate us. The last thing I remember is the feeling of warm liquid on my hand.
I woke up in a new hospital. The walls were blank. Where were my things? Did the nurses take all my things? I find my way to the dining hall. Wow, this is different. I sat at a table in front of the TV. They had the news channel on.
This just end. New information about the gruesome homicide in the small town of Conklin. Two parents murdered by their son Gregory Lincoln. Doctors say that he was, in fact, on medication for hallucinations. However, they were ineffective and did not stop him from repeatedly stabbing his parents. Linsey live at the crime scene now…

Like the dirt where flowers grow
Like the comb where honey flows
Like the feather of a crow
Your eyes are sharp
like a thorn on a rose
Ah yes this is
Another love poem
But what’d you expect
From a heart that is wrecked
But wait
Because your more
Than just cute
every time we talk
I fall more in love with you
Your voice is like
A flowing river
That always makes
My heart quiver
With my hand in yours
I feel like I'm home
Wrap your arms around me
Protection from cold
Lost in your eyes
Dark like a storm
But warm like a fire
Alive in our hearts
“Married”
Sitting in the waiting room in the small business I work for, trying to think about where they’ll send me next.
“Cherry, come into my office please.” My boss peeks his shiny bald head out of his door. Grabbing my flip phone and passport I head in.
“Give me your phone and passport.” My boss took my things and like usual, opened his ‘safe’ and threw them into the incinerator. My boss opens the vent above the ceiling and pulls out a briefcase. He sets it on his desk, turns it toward me, and opens it. There was a file, a pair of tasers, a pair of new passports, a pair of flip phones and a few thousand dollars.
“Am I married this time?” I’ve never been married because I hate working with others.
“Yes, Cherry. Can you handle that?” My boss asked, knowing that I can’t say no.
“Ha, I can handle anything. Is he going to be able to handle me?”
The new guy came running into the office.
“I’m here! I’m sorry I was trying to find this building and I was so lost. Who idea was it to put this place 20 stories underground? Did you find this place easily?” He turns to me with his hand out. “Hi, I’m Jake.”
“Okay, first don’t tell people your real name and second give him your passport and phone we need to leave soon."
Jake gave his phone to our boss and our boss threw it into his ‘safe’.
“Hey! That phone was expensive!” He turned to me. “Why did he do that?”
“Jake calm down. Cherry you should probably carry the briefcase, and you might want to leave now because the jet is ready. Jake, Cherry will explain everything to you.” My boss hands me the briefcase and I walk out of the office, leaving Jake to following close behind.
We board the private jet and I change into my new clothes. Then I read about our mission.
“Your name is Christopher Cole, my name is Allisa Cole.”
“Oh, that has a nice ring to it. Get it. Ring.” Jake was laughing at his own joke.
“Shut up and let me finish. We will have to take down a drug cartel.” I close the file and prepare myself for the mission.
not my time
Laying on the shards of glass covering the cement. A flash of reds and blues.
“Stay awake, were going to take you to the hospital. Can you tell me your name?”
I felt a sharp pain in my hip and leg. I can’t move. The only thing I can get out is “hurry” before I close my eyes.
I open my eyes to see my husband, mom, grandparents, and more family. They come to me with open arms.
“Where are we?” I turn to husband, he hugs me once more.
“It’s not your time,” he says. But within a blink of an eye, everyone is gone.
I look around to find myself in a hospital; gray walls, gray floors, and gray sheets. I try to sit up but I can’t move. I don’t know why I’m here, or how I got here. Then it all comes back to me. My husband sitting in the passenger seat, we were fighting about him working too much. I told him I wish we had never gotten married. Then a blue truck swerved into our lane.
A tear runs down my cheek, a nurse walks into my room.
“Hi, my name is Lanie I’m your nurse. Are you feeling okay?”
“Is he okay?”
“Unfortunately your husband did not make it, I’m sorry.”
“But I saw him. I saw him and my mom and my grandparents.”
“ I’m sorry ma’am’. We have got your test results back. You have suffered severe blood loss and you may become paraplegia. Your legs were severely injured. However, even though you are still early in the pregnancy, your baby should be fine.”
“I.. I’m pregnant?” I pause, thinking, I guess it wasn’t my time.
