The Sounds of Summer
I lay listening to the birds singing their evening songs. I can hear the frogs in the creek across the dirt road I live on. I think to myself, "I love living in the country! Just think of all the kids who can't sleep in a tent in their front yard."
Above the tent a bright moon drifts by, and the stars twinkle. I can hear the breathing of my sister in her sleeping bag beside me. She's fast asleep, just like I should be. I gaze up at the tent ceiling, and listen to the crickets nearby, chirping. Out of the darkness comes the loud, sudden song of a bird. I vaguely wonder why it's singing so late, as my eyelids grow heavy. I curl up against my sister as sleep overtakes me.
Guide to planning your stay on Marthas Vineyard
Morning
Living near the shore, the summer evening chill lingers late into the morning. If you wish to warm up quickly, then wake early at sunrise to warm in the outside air. Furthermore, if you enjoy scenic views, commence with a jog. Doing so before the day picks up is ideal because you will sweat earnestly from effort (rather than to cool down). You should pick up breakfast on your route or else use it to motivate yourself to return home before facing the real summer heat.
Afternoon
Whether you find yourself outside or not, make sure you get a bus pass. Even if you plan to chase trails, the option to get anywhere you need is helpful. Depending on what type of traveler you are, you might choose to shop around town, bask on the beach, or pick local produce. It is suggested you plan what you wish to do according to the weather:
happy and cheerful = beach (swimming, scouring, sunbathing)
shy and pensive = produce (picking, petting, plowing)
sad and dreary = shopping (entertainment, eating, exploring)
Evening
Once it gets dark you will have no choice but to stay inside. Don't worry--now is the proper time to turn on the tv and the electronics. Upload all your photos. Make your calls. Sort through your discoveries. And finally: fill your Jack Wills mug, lay back, and pose as though you live in Great Britain!
