I sighed with contentment as his heartbeat filled my ears. His firm chest rose and fell under my head.

I woke with a start to the stairs creaking. I relaxed when I realized I no longer felt his heart beat. Then I realized I still felt his body under mine.

The Rules (Part 1)

As a child, my mom had lots of rules; so the ones about the woods never seemed too strange. Don’t go in them after dark. Don’t go beyond a certain point. There were others, but this was the idea. It wasn’t until I was twenty that I learned the truth.
