A Sunny Day At The Lake
It is a beautiful sunny day, at least that’s what everyone else is saying. I watch them frolic from my position under the only bit of shade in the whole area. Morons, I told them they are going to get burned but they all laughed it off. I mumble mockingly under my breath. “No I won’t burn I’ll just get a healthy tan.” Tans aren’t heathy they’re just the first step toward skin cancer. I inch over to the right, my sliver of shade is soon going to be gone and my only choice will be to enter the water and hope my SPF is strong enough and waterproof. Or... I glance over at another family, their kids are making mud pies. Mud, mud is wet and cool I could coat myself in it and lounge like a hippo at the waters edge. Not the most dignified solution but better than spending the next week wrapped in aloe and regretting life.
This is not what I pictured. I look down at my body and yes the mud is covering me but not the way I would have liked. The lovely coolness is gone instead it’s warm and cracking, falling off with my every move. I look down at the small hole I made when I removed the mud. It’s still cool inside, if it was bigger I would crawl in. Problem is it would take a lot of time to dig it with my bare hands. Frustrated I reach in and will myself to pull out enough dirt. I close my eyes to protect them and dig furiously like a dog. It takes me a while to realize the lakeside has gone quiet. I open my eyes and to my surprise the hole I have dug is more than big enough for me and my whole family. I laugh, they always called me their little mole, they were right. Earthbender, I never have to go in the sun again. Smiling I jump into my hole and pull the dirt over me.
