Innocence
You tap to the rhythm of jazz,
Fruit Loops running down your mouth
A we prepare for the day.
I iron my shirt in the living room
While you tell me how excited you are.
The purity of the joy in your eyes
Despite a hard day's work ahead.
You have a big heart even now,
At three years old and counting,
And you make decisions like a man.
This one was to help the church's kitchen
Cook soup and make bread for the homeless,
Something I didn't even want for Christmas.
But here we are, getting ready together,
And I couldn't be happier to be a dad.
