If the Cap Fits....
Wear it,
They say,
It worse today,
Than it was yesterday.
But how can that be so?
Surely you know,
That people of difference,
Were forced to sow,
The seeds of death,
Among their race,
With no respect,
Or grace.
It's not about you,
It's about them,
Whoever they are,
Near or far,
There's always those,
Worse off,
Than those who chose,
Or were chosen,
To live the better life,
The good life,
The entitled,
The privileged,
The lucky ones,
Who sons,
And daughters,
Will drink clean water,
Breathe clean air,
Live their dream
Without a care,
In their world,
With their own
Not for another,
That they don't consider,
A mother,
Or a brother,
Or sister,
Oh no, Mister,
It's all about us,
Who cares about them?
We only care for when,
Those times the sun
Shines upon us again,
And again,
And again.
Yes, there's justice,
Yes, there's fair,
But only when I'm
Standing on the very top stair,
Looking down,
Feeling sad,
At how terrible,
How bad,
You've all got it,
When others have it good,
But I'm not part of
That equation,
The squalor,
The horrors of the hood,
It's a problem on TV,
In the news,
A song sung blue,
It's not about me,
It's all about you,
But I'm OK,
I worked hard.
I didn't get here,
Through lottery,
Charity,
Or a social gift card,
Life's not fair,
You get dealt your hand,
Like a zebra,
Chewing grass,
As the lions,
Form a band,
We're all defenseless at heart,
No matter where we start,
And the end game,
Is the same,
Even for those,
Who aren't to blame,
And for those who are,
They'll be wishing on a star,
Cos when is all hits the fan,
Every woman,
Every man,
Leaves this world the same way,
Sleeping tight,
On judgement day,
How will you be judged?
Did you do enough?
Have you had it rough?
Because wherever you end up,
Make sure you've got the stuff,
To look back and say,
I did my bit,
Everyday,
I found a way,
To give some back,
Not do jack,
Not be a hack,
I shed some light,
I helped those fight,
Who wanted to scrap,
And go the extra lap,
It's not about you,
Or me,
Or them,
It's us,
The short,
The strong,
The rich,
The poor,
The weak,
The tall,
It all about us,
All of us.
Average Doesn’t Live Here Anymore
It's all well and good,
When your on the up and up,
But things can get rough,
Being good enough.
There's no need to feel down,
When you're the only one around,
No need to bluff,
You're good enough.
Out there in the clear,
No one standing near,
Made of the right stuff,
You're good enough.
If the best you ever had,
Is getting just better than bad,
It becomes tough love,
Being good enough.
One angle shows light,
Things are alright,
You're out of the bluff,
You're good enough.
On the darker side of things,
The fat lady sadly sings,
The going got tough,
You're not good enough.
Comfortably you settle,
Not showing any mettle,
The least amount of stuff,
Now, isn't good enough.
When you're out there with the rest
And the best put you to the test,
Life let's you know you're in the rough,
When good doesn't come close to good enough.
It’s Coming
There’s only one winner,
Nothing to fight,
Embrace the endless night.
This one way street,
It’s a cold fact,
No coming back.
It’s predictable,
So no tears,
No fear.
The way to go?
I don’t know,
Enjoy the show.
Painless would be nice,
End on high,
With time to say goodbye.
The way I hope to die?
With nothing left to do,
And you all knowing I love you.
A Man Walks in to a Bar...
Only because it was set far too low,
Do we seek to achieve the minimal.
Progress really is way to slow,
Our achievements false and criminal.
We set out on a journey doomed from the start,
To a destination that we know is fake.
It's all wrong and we know deep in our hearts,
But the dollars are much sweeter to take.
Why is it OK to settle for so much less,
And aim so purposely and accurately off target?
With groups, and labels, and the whole prejudice mess,
That proves to be such a profitable market.
We're so anti this, and anti that,
Yet, when achieved only leaves us at zero.
Who's got the pitch to go full bat,
And hit that home-run, to become a hero?
Because when the bar is constantly set too low,
There's always a guy who'll walk into one,
Let's set our sights high and move not so slow,
And become a civilization to depend on.
Springtime
Not a prequel to the Gershwin classic,
More of a beginning all on its own.
The buds, the blossom, the early colors of life,
The blooming adventures of seeds long since sown.
The early dawning sunlight scorches through the curtains,
Air warmly moist, scented by freshly cut grass.
The greens of all shades are lush, thick, shiny, rich,
Early morning joggers are boosted by this divine blessed blast.
We marched out of March and all the madness that came with it,
And summertime is almost here, just out of view.
But the joy of April is all around, fooling us once more,
As lost in its stupendous splendor, I forgot, the taxes are due.
We Made It...
We soldiered on,
Through it all,
Onward and upwards,
We stood strong, stood tall.
We took everything,
That came our way,
The never ending cycles,
Was it Groundhog Day?
We saw the light,
At the tunnels end,
One corner to turn,
The final bend.
But the path got steeper,
So much to take,
Then it came out of nowhere,
Bang! Spring Break!
