The Dragon and the Princess.
In a time of myth and fantasy there lived men and dragons, mortal and immortal, each wanting what the other possessed and they never could. For some, this was the power to rule to eternity but for others, it was a peaceful death beside the one they loved. The wars were legendarily brutal but ultimately pointless. A man can only dream of eternity, which to a dragon is its curse and a dragon never forgets. That is until we humans had been pushed to our final bastion, Haven the great white castle of the kings. The largest horde ever assembled threw itself against the mighty white stones of Haven shaking its foundation to the very bedrock on which it was built. Their leader, the great Wyrmlord Ellanher, watching on. The knights fought valiantly but to no avail, for the dragons had every advantage, even the strongest of stone cannot hold for long against the might of a dragon. When all hope seemed lost and even the greatest among us began to waver, the beautiful princess Rosalind emerged from her room in the depths of the citadel. Her skin as porcelain and her voice the smoothest silk. She called out to the knights and the horde alike and proclaimed her hatred of the battle that raged below her and all paused to listen. Most intently among them, Drayce the son of Ellanher. Drayce slowly approached the princess, his blue wings and serpentine body shining in the afternoon sun, and landed on the steps in front of her. Using the powers only bestowed to those lucky enough to be called Wyrm he transformed himself into the image of a human and proclaimed his undying love for the princess. With one proclamation the eternal war had finally come to an end, dragons and men looking forward in an improbable peace, but not all was as it seemed. The greed of humans knows no bound and the rage of a dragon is not so easily sated. Rosalind the princess of humanity and Drayce the prince of wyrm lived out their days in bliss and ignorance of the hatred that still boiled beneath their castle walls. Her own father, the great king of humanity saught to use his own daughter to rid the world of dragonkind forever. He looked to the counsel of the old wizard Gellert and placed a terrible curse upon Rosalind, for if she was killed by the talon of her love the entire line of wyrm would cease to be. Out of love for his daughter or pride and a longing for honor and celebrity, the king took the deed into his own hands. He snuck into their chamber, carved a talon from Drayce's sleeping body, and walked over to his daughter, the only living heir to his kingdom. The king raised his hands high above his head and drove the talon into his daughter's chest. Drayce awoke to the pain of a broken heart and threw the king from the chamber and onto the stone far below. He caressed his dying love and asked the heavens for any way that they might be saved, unknowing of the terrible curse. Drayce used what little strength remained of his once-proud line and wrapped himself around his Rosalind, forever encasing her in his impenetrable scales. They still long for the day when men are no longer controlled by greed and hate, this dragon fruit a symbol of the undying love of a dragon and the all too temporary love of a human.
Tiger and Rock
When the world was new, Tiger was known amung the animals for its shining bright eyes. Any who looked straight into Tiger's gaze would find themselves unable to see. Tiger was miserable. No one wanted to be friennds with someone who could blind with a look! So, Tiger went searching for someone to fix his eyes. He first asked Sun. "Oh Sun, with your glorious hot rays, can you fix my eyes?"
Sun responded, "Why Tiger, what is wrong with them?"
"My eyes are so bright, no one will come near! Surely you, with your brilliant shine, could help me?"
"I cannot. Perhaps Sky could give you what you need." And thus Tiger went from place to place, asking earth and grass and cloud alike. Every time, the answer was the same. No.
Finally, Tiger came across Rock, dull and brown. " Oh Rock, can you take the shine from my eyes?"
"Tiger, such shine is a gift! I have been wishing for such shine for as long as I have been. I would love to help you!"
Tiger was overjoyed. " Oh Rock, I will do anything!"
"Simply swear to Mother Earth that your eye's shine belongs to Rock, and only Rock." Rock instructed gleefully. And so Tiger did, and it was done.
Rock, once a dull muddy brown, now gleamed gold. Tiger jumped and jumped, running back to the animals to show off his new eyes.
"Tiger! What has happened to your eyes?" Porkupine questioned.
"I have gotten rid of their shine! I shall blind no more!"
"You fool! You look so dull and grey now - a more boring creature I have never seen!"
And thus Tiger sulked off, to the laughter of the animals.
"Rock, you tricked me!" Tiger growled.
"No," Rock answered. "I gave you exactly want you wanted."
And Tiger bowed his head, defeated.
To this day, Rock is still known as Tiger's Eye.
Deer
As time wore on the children of a small fishing village started to lose appreciation for their culture and families. Little by little each child was being drawn to the trees and fields surrounding the streams.
As the children were seeking out their curiosity for the forest and fields something was capturing their imaginations. Things just didn't seem good to their parents. Only nobody could figure out why.
So the children started spending more and more time exploring the grassy hills and leave trees.
Most of the older children were expected to work with the grown ups in the fishing trade. But they didn't want to do it anymore. The problem grew bigger. Every day wad a tug of war between fishing and finding a different way of life.
One afternoon while the oldest and strongest boys were exploring the river's edge near the river's bend. Something came out of the water. The mud and river vegetation swirled around and become one form. The development of the form took on a shape. An animal with four legs a long narrow body a thin neck and a long face.
This new creature turned back towards the water stomped in the water causing a herd of identical creature to come up out if the river.
Startled curious and shaken these boys ran to a bush to hide.
As the herd ran off into the trees the boys said we will go get bows and arrows to hunt and kill one of these creatures. Hoping to discover what they were.
Gathering together to meet at the place the cteatures showed up. Each boy went his way to hunt. It wasn't easy but a creature was hit and killed.
Not knowing what else to do but gut it and scale it. As they would a fish. They skined the animal collected the best meat and took the head.
When the elders of the village saw their food and fur supply an explanation was needed.
The boys told the elders that creatures came from the river and ran to the fields and trees to graze and eat.
It was a few months later when winter came the cteatures became very visible. Some of the older women were saying those poor dear animals. So the name deer stuck and became what the villagers called them.
Now the villagers had two forms of trade. Fish and deer. Although some young adult children stayed in the fishing industry and some grown men chose to explore the deer hunting industry. Most young men took up hunting.
After time things worked out between the villagers. Fishing is still profitable while hunting is taking on a new life both industries can survive together.
Nobody knows why the deer were formed in the muddy waters that day. It is just an accepted fact that deer that day entered the world forever
Punica Granatum
And it is known:
The Great Blue looked upon the sky and smiled, for the birds and the clouds were happy.
The Soft Brown looked at the earth and smiled, for the trees and the creatures were pleased.
The Deep Green scowled at the sky and leered at the earth for it wanted both. Not content with its share of the world, Green wanted more. It had cast itself into the sky yet Blue had smote it into droplets which wound their way back to Green in rivulets and streams. Green had transformed itself into giant shards of ice, mocking the Soft Brown, but Brown had not accepted Green’s new form and asked Blue to blow it to the top of the world.
Green knew what it must do. While ever Blue and Brown were united, they would best Green at every turn. Green would have to engulf Brown, thus robbing Blue of it ally.
And so Green roared and rocked and swirled and swelled. And Green grew bigger and bigger, and it encroached upon Brown.
Trees were submerged and creatures fled the lowlands as Green flooded across the Soft Brown. As Green expanded, so Brown shrank and soon there was not enough of Brown to support the creatures it treasured.
‘Fear not,’ said Brown unto its creatures, ‘for I will protect you. I will made you smaller so you can all fit on my back.’
And all the creatures were transformed, reduced to small red berries. Now they could huddle close together in the mountains.
But Green’s jealousy was not sated. Still, Green wanted more. Green lashed at the rocks and thundered at the cliffs and, in its fury, some of the creatures-now-berries fell from their perches and were lost to the bottomless Green.
Brown wailed. It had made its creatures small to shelter them from Green yet in doing so Brown had taken from them any defence they once had. Its creatures were now at the mercy of the Deep Green.
Then Blue swooped down and scooped a score of creatures-now-berries and encased them together in skin as soft as cloud.
Brown cheered as Blue repeated it action again and again and again. Soon, all of Brown’s creatures-now-berries were safely cocooned in protective balls.
And Green, seeing that it had been beaten once more, receded from Soft Brown and returned to its former size.
And when Brown saw that it was safe, it split open Blue’s pomegranates and allowed fertile life to spring forth and blossom once more.
And it is known:
The Deep Green is not content with its lot and yet plots its next rise against the Soft Brown.
