The Best Man.
I love the way your nose
Turns up a little at the end
And how your eyes close
When you kiss him.
It shows your tenderness.
God, I hate kissing him
Especially when Gary is here.
I have to close my eyes
To stop myself looking over
And gazing at him
Wishing I were kissing him.
God I hate kissing her
Especially when Gary is here.
I’m glad she closes her eyes
So she can’t see me gazing over her shoulder at him
Wishing I were kissing him.
This is a great wedding.
I'm so pleased my two best friends got married.
The Consequences of Unrequited Love
An EMT zipped up the body bag of James Thatcher. A young man. Senior in college. Already had an amazing business-type job offer set up for after graduation.
A police officer tucked a combat knife with a Red Ebony emblem in an evidence bag. Covered in James Thatcher’s unmistakable blood and possible culprit’s fingerprints, it would surely be used as evidence later on.
While it may not seem like it at the moment, James Thatcher was blessed. Blessed with perfect brunette hair and gorgeous blue eyes. Flawless tan skin and a six-foot stature. Top of the class and on top of the world. Had every girl at Martin University madly in love with him. Yes, sir, James Thatcher was truly blessed.
So how did we get to this point? Well, the answer to that begins one week ago with…
Jessie Muller. Jessie Muller thought she was blessed. And she had every reason to believe so—except actually being blessed. Jessie Muller was the up and coming hit new celebrity thanks to her success in starring in the movie Serpents on a Plane. Waves of her new fans bought thousands of posters, autographs, and—on the occasional dark website—tissues. Didn’t matter to her. All that mattered to Jessie were three things. One: the ultimate success of her career. Two: maintaining her scholarship as the second best student at Martin University. Three: James Thatcher. Not necessarily in that order.
But, there was one more. Elliot Parke. He clearly wasn’t blessed. Not in the slightest. He wasn’t naturally talented or gifted and had an average rank at Martin University. Elliot had a stout, chubby figure and spine issues. He had never had a girlfriend, or a boyfriend, and rarely an actual friend. So he put all this pent up love into loving Jessie Muller. And to put it simply, he was her biggest fan.
Friday, June 3rd sometime in the early 2010s. Jessie, James, and Elliot were all at Martin University's library. That week was finals, but they weren’t studying books. They were studying each other.
Jessie couldn’t help but stare at James. His perfect jawline was enough to make any girl drool. Jessie was no exception. “Hey, Jess.” Alexis, Jessie’s best friend since the third grade, shook her. “Jess? Are you alright?”
“Huh? Oh yeah. I’m fine.”
“You really need to study. Finals are this week and I heard Professor Watts was fighting with his wife lately. You just know he’s gonna take that out on us with a killer exam.”
“Yeah, I know. But Marketing 302 is my best class this year.” After all, it was something she used on a daily basis to progress her career. Everyone knows there’s no real money on being famous unless you can sell a brand with it.
Besides, Professor Watts had a thing for Jessie. That’s probably what he and his wife were fighting about.
“Is that so? Then maybe you can finally snatch that top spot from James Thatcher. I hear he’s been struggling between the last chapter and balancing his modeling gigs with school.”
Jessie chewed on her nails—a nervous habit. She’s noticed the same things. Her poor Jamie wasn’t doing too hot. And what kind of future girlfriend would she be if she took top spot from him? Steal his scholarship? No. She won’t. Jessie Muller had already decided: next week she would take a dip on her final. No big deal.
From across the room, Elliot Parke stared at Jessie staring at James. It was hard to focus on books when the goddess of beauty was so close to him. How he longed for the courage to just ask her out. His heart wanted to, but his legs refused.
He wondered if she liked Red Ebony. Red Ebony was a popular band that was shrouded in mystery. All of their faces were hidden and their true identities were left unknown. Due to a combo of this mystery and their kick in’ music, they were extremely popular among college students.
Glancing at the library’s clock, Elliot noted that it was time to go home. He had piano practice. Even though he was in college, he still practiced every night, refusing to let his skills dull for he was convinced that one day, he could use these skills to woo Jessie Muller.
And so, his tiny crush continued to grow into an unmanageable heap of suppressed feelings. Bound to burst at any minute like the supervolcano in Yellowstone.
James was the only one in that library that was actually reading a book. Or trying to at least, it was kinda of difficult to pay attention to anything when his crush was in the same room as him.
“Hey there, James.” Jessie twirled her hair around her finger. Slightly biting her lip, she asked. “Have any big plans for after finals?”
“Oh, not really.”
“That’s a shame.” She brushed his arm. “Maybe we can do something together?”
James paused. He wasn’t quite sure if he and Jessie were friends. She never talked to him in class and always seemed to be glaring at him. Nonetheless, he agreed.“Sure! That could be fun.”
Jessie beamed. “Fabulous! See you on Friday!” After she blew him a kiss that James never saw, she strolled out the door, already imagining their perfect life together.
At the exit, Elliot stopped, his tightly clenched fists at his sides. Jessie was his crush. How dare James seduce her. His hands trembled at his sides. You see, Elliot had already decided something at that moment too: by the end of the end, James would live to regret that.
Or die to regret that.
Friday night, June 10th. Red Ebony was set to play a concert on the Martha Harte Venue in one hour. Jessie had already bought two front row tickets to it and was getting ready to surprise James with them. After all, he had a hard week with finals and as Jessie’s future boyfriend, he deserved to be spoiled a little bit.
“I have a surprise for you~!” She gleefully sang. “Red Ebony tickets!” She slapped them on the table. “Bam!”
“Oh my god! I love those guys!” James leaned in close. “I even have a little crush on their keytarist.”
Wait, what? Jessie had to do a double take. “A crush? On a keytarist? Are you kidding me? You don’t even know who they are!”
“Oh I do! I once caught them after a show! You’ll never believe it! The keytarist of Red Ebony is…”
Elliot Parke glared at James Thatcher from across the street. He was talking to Jessie, and it looked like they were really hitting it off. Elliot tightly clasped the strap of his backpack. Inside there was only one object: a knife with a Red Ebony emblem on it. A friend of his gave it to him a long time ago. Said it was good for ‘cutting apple chunks and eating them directly off the knife. That’s the only correct way to eat an apple.’ Doubt they imagined it being used for this.
Even from across the poorly lit up street, Elliot could see Jessie smiling in perfect vision.
Smiling?
Yes, she was smiling. She was laughing. She was happy.
Jessie slammed something on the table and her grin grew even more. Due to her smile, Elliot found one on his lips. If she was happy, he was happy. That’s all he could ever want. That’s what love is.
His grip loosened in the bag. What was he doing? Why was he here? Elliot had plans, he had a place to be. Letting go of all his anger, Elliot threw the backpack—and knife—in a nearby trash can and walked away.
“Elliot Parke!” James squealed.
“Elliot Parke? That loser who sits in the back row of our marketing class?”
“Really? I’m think he’s really cute and really talented.”
“So, you’re gay?”
“Yup.”
“You can’t be gay!”
James cocked his head. “I can’t??? Are you okay? Your face is turning red? Are you having an allergic reaction to the air or something?”
“You ruined everything!” Jessie shouted. “You were supposed to my perfect trophy boyfriend while I raised to the top of Hollywood! I failed my final so you could say the number one student!”
“I never asked you to do that—“
“You’ve betrayed me, James Thatcher!” She picked up her purse and tickets. “We’re done!” And with that, Jessie stormed off.
“Wait, were we ever dating?” James asked out loud.
“Dammit!” Jessie kicked over a trash can. “Ow my foot! And my shoes! These are Gucci! Ugh!”
As the garbage spilled out across the sidewalk, something caught Jessie’s eye. A knife with a Red Ebony emblem. Slowly, she crouched down and pulled the sleeve of her sweater over her hand. She picked up the knife, keeping the filth off her hands ad her fingerprints off the knife. As she looked at the blade, the reflection of her eye looked back. Along with a new idea, glaring her in the face.
And she liked it.
Elliot Parke was arrested for the murder of James Thatcher the next day. Jessie’s connection to the murder was never prove and Elliot was forced to a plea bargain. Her career reached as high as the stars. Elliot could barely see the stars through his bars.
These are just the consequences of unrequited love.
God punished her
