Colors of Me
I am
splashes of red
worn in the confidence of lips and dresses
pulsing in the heart that was born fiery and endless
I am
Spring's delicate shade of green appearing as if by magic
reminding you of what it is to be born again
I am
the canopy of blue that blankets you
the restless hue that invites you
to drown in my sea
I am
black and grey
storming on your horizon
light's dark companion
daring you to know beauty without deprivation
I am
bright bold colors ripping through your darkest moments
Loss
How quickly joy fades with the faintest shades of red
The swell of hope subsides
The subtle changes of something new are now cruel reminders of something lost
And outside my window there is life
Sirens blare
People rush to and from
The workday begins
But my mind is lost to what the world never knew
Had no time to expect
Had no reason to miss
What is nothing more now than shades of red
Crossing the Staten Island Ferry
Ferry me across this river
Navigate these waters that do not seem to slow
Cast off the lines that hold us to the foggy shore
Let's leave it all behind
We are spectators if just for a moment to the busy-ness that surrounds
The barge and its tow move in equal silence
Like us
Burdened and incapable of doing it alone
Lightening and Lady Liberty dance in the darkest moments before day's end
And you and I without word but with motion
Rise and find
That the fog has lifted and a new shore awaits
Lit up like the first light of a new day
Please find me
I've loved you in this life
Please find me in the next
So that you can stop leaving
And I can stop waiting
And we can move freely
As though we are ghosts seamlessly sliding into places we've waited for through lives we can't remember
Please find me in the next life
And I will love you as I have in this one
Gone
One day silence will be what connects us
And the footsteps we planted gently will be covered over
Gone will be the only traces of you and I
One day you will reach for my words
Waiting to feel a smile creep across
Your face
But all you will feel is the catch of your breath, the empty grip in the pit of your stomach
One day loneliness will seize you
When all that remains are the ghosts of my kisses haunting the skin upon your neck
You will miss me as intensely as you loved me
And I, you
For we built a house of rocks on a rushing river and our pieces will scatter far and wide
Changes
Fall away from that which holds you to this place
Leave and take with you the newness that you once promised
Tenderly you arrived, a faint light of hope on a mostly barren landscape
But the days grew long
And the nights suffocating
So change your hue
and lose yourself in the crisp morning breezes
These are the signs of the changing seasons
