Harry Situation’s Top 10 Best Movies of 2017
2017 comes to a close.
Despite all the controversy and chaos in the world this year has actually been a good year for movies. Epic superhero blockbusters, smash hit sequels, and original new tales were all on the big screen. And I, like many, got a chance to check them out. So I’ve decided to compile a list of the Top 10 Best Movies of 2017.
My rules for placement are simple:
1) This list was organized based on my personal thoughts of the movies. If there’s a movie on this list that you don’t like or a movie that should be placed on this list, then I highly recommend you posting your own list. Again this is just my opinion. You don’t have to agree with it.
2) They have to be movies that I’ve seen. So if you’re hoping that a movie like Baby Driver or Get Out to be on this list. I’m sorry to say that I haven’t had the chance to see those movies yet.
3) In order to be placed on my Best Movies list these movies must have received a A- to A+ on my grading scale, and have the hashtag AGrade with the review. I’ll make acceptions for movies that received a B+ because I may not always see every movie I want; or not every movie recieves a solid A. That’s just how it goes.
4) I won’t be reviewing them again, but I will provide some additional commentary to each pick. Links to these reviews will also be provided in case you ever want to read them again or you haven’t checked them out yet.
5) These are only for full length feature films that came out in the year 2017. Any films I reviewed before that year will not be placed on the list. Additionally short films will not be featured as well. As much as I loved the short film In A Heartbeat and I hope it gets an Oscar nomination, it will not be on this list sad to say.
For an honorable mention I would like to give a shout out to Thor: Ragnorak. It was a fun Marvel flick, and the best of the Thor movies. Sadly it barely made the cut to this list.
And now let’s jump right into my picks for the Top 10 Best Movies of 2017, starting with...
Number 10: Captain Underpants

My Final Grade: A
Additional Thoughts: This is probably the most underrated movie of 2017, at least in my opinion. I remember reading some of the books as a kid and wondered when a feature film would come. And now it’s here and it was great. Captain Underpants was just absolute fun. If you were a fan of the books way back when you’ll likely love this movie. If not check it out for a fun animated comedy. Just know there’s a bunch of toilet humor in it.
Number 9: War for the Planet of the Apes
Link: https://theprose.com/post/173340/harry-situation-reviews-war-for-the-planet-of-the-apes
My Final Grade: A
Additional Thoughts: The prequel/reboot trilogy comes to a spectacular close with War for the Planet of the Apes. The tale of the ape Caesar’s rise, his dawn of the new world, and his war for survival have ended in this amazing third installment in a pretty solid trilogy. I loved each of these new Planet of the Ape films and they’ve seemed to get better with each new sequel. Andy Serkis was just phenomenal as Caesar with both his acting and motion capture performance. It’s something to go ape over.
Number 8: Wonder Woman
Link: https://theprose.com/post/164434/harry-situation-reviews-wonder-woman
My Final Grade: A
Additional Thoughts: Finally, a DC film that both critics and audiences enjoyed! Wonder Woman was the superhero movie I’ve been hoping for. This is a proper way to start up the DC Extended Universe. It was fun, it was badass, and Gal Gadot owns the role. It really gets me pumped for DC’s next film (for the most part).
Number 7: IT (2017 version)
Link: https://theprose.com/post/182698/harry-situation-reviews-it-2017
My Final Grade: A
Additional Thoughts: This is hands down the scariest movie I’ve seen all year, and definitely one of my favorites. IT was an absolute blast to watch. The kids who played the members of the Losers Club were amazing and Pennywise himself was truly terrifying. And from my understanding, IT is now considered one of the best adapted movies of Stephen King’s work. You won’t know fear until you’ve seen IT!
Number 6: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Link: https://theprose.com/post/195863/harry-situation-reviews-star-wars-episode-viii-the-last-jedi
My Final Grade: A+
Additional Thoughts: I can understand that fans have very mixed feelings about this movie. Hell, placing this here alone will divide some of my readers. But regardless the amount of fun I had while watching The Last Jedi outweighed the flaws it had, and that’s what a proper movie should do. I really loved Star Wars: The Last Jedi. I loved the bold new direction it would for the series. The main theme for this film is that it is not following the path that the other films took, it’s following a new one. The cast and characters were amazing, the action was great, and it was a true send off to the beloved Carrie Fisher. If you don’t like this movie that’s fine. I get it. Just please act mature about it and don’t ruin it for those who did enjoy the film. In the meantime, I going to set course to the new horizon a the galaxy far, far away.
Number 5: The Lego Batman Movie
Link: https://theprose.com/post/136662/harry-situation-reviews-the-lego-batman-movie
My Final Grade: A+
Additional Thoughts: It’s Lego and Batman! What more do you need? The Lego Batman Movie was one of the most fun animated films of the year. I’ll be pissed if it doesn’t get nominated for something. The voice talents were excellent, the animation stylish, the jokes worked, and it was a clever nod to various Batman lore but done in Lego form.
Number 4: Logan
Link: https://theprose.com/post/140217/harry-situation-reviews-logan
My Final Grade: A+
Additional Thoughts: Hugh Jackman delivers his final and most powerful portrayal of Marvel’s most popular comic book character, the Wolverine. Logan wasn’t just another comic book movie, it was an emotional roadtrip from start to finish. My heart broke everytime Logan was at his weakest but he kept fighting. Patrick Stewart was at his best as Charles Xavier in this film too. Makes you really wonder why the hell he went to voice a poop emoji doesn’t it? And if you want a film that’ll make me cry at the end, this is it.
Number 3: Dunkirk
Link: https://theprose.com/post/174599/harry-situation-reviews-dunkirk
My Final Grade: A+
Additional Thoughts: Dunkirk was a movie experience unlike any other. Picture the first twenty minutes of Saving Private Ryan, you know the D-Day scene, but imagine watching it for two nail-biting hours. Dunkirk was a film that had to be experienced on the big screen. It won’t feel as grand scale like watching it on Blu-ray. But regardless it was a great experience to see it on opening day. For a while this was originally going to be my pick for the top spot but there were two others that topped this one.
Number 2: Blade Runner 2049
Link: https://theprose.com/post/186471/harry-situation-reviews-blade-runner-2049
My Final Grade: A+
Additional Thoughts: This was by far the best sequel to come out of this year. I’ll be honest I didn’t have much hopes for it but that’s how this film won me over. Who would have thought that a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner could be so good? Hell it wasn’t good, it was fantastic. Blade Runner 2049 did everything a sequel should do. Reintroduce viewers to a world previously established, adding and building new lore to that world, and standing on its own two feet and not feeling like a carbon copy. I was dazzled by this beautifully written, acted, and directed sequel. Too bad it wasn’t a box office hit. Why the hell not? Did you people go see this movie like I told you to do? No? Why the hell not? If you spent your money to see The Case for Christ instead of this epic film, SHAME ON YOU!
Number 1: The Disaster Artist
Link: https://theprose.com/post/195945/harry-situation-reviews-the-disaster-artist
My Final Grade: A+
Additional Thoughts: People might say this is cheap but I don’t give a fuck. The Disaster Artist is probably my favorite movie of the year. James Franco and company recreate Tommy Wiseau’s infamous film The Room and tell the story behind the making of it. What I loved most about it was its message. Follow your dreams; and when you end up failing, turn it around and make it a success. And that’s why The Disaster Artist is my top pick for Best Movie of 2017.
So there’s my list for the Top 10 Best Movies of 2017. Have you seen any of these movies? What were your thoughts? Any movies that should have made this list? As usual please be kind, leave a like and comment, and be sure to check out my listings for the Bottom 5 Worst Movies of 2017 when I post that soon.
