Sleep
When I wake up
I close my eyes
And try to remember my dreams
From the night
Because crazy stuff happens
When my conscious sleeps
And my mind is free
And when I see me
Because I am not true
To who I choose to be
Someone more than me
Someone everyone sees
As Perfect
Because no one is Perfect.
But when asleep
This Perfect me
Decides to think
Decides to breath
And Understand
I'm just a man
I'm not a god
I have no plan
And when I sleep
I can see
That I’m someone
Who isn’t me
So I contemplate
In my bed
Who am I
To my head
I just don't know
So when I wake
I close my eyes
And fall back to sleep
Jack O’Lantern
Have you heard of the legend of the poor troubadour
Who enchanted your hearing while making fun of you?
His talent for music was well renowned,
But what a pity his jokes were so bland.
One night in October, when he got drunk,
Walking around town like an unskilled acrobat,
He made a mistake that he could never payback.
He made a joke about a witch's pointy hat.
In his liquor sweetened infused delight,
And without caring who else was in sight,
He told her it looked like the stem of a pumpkin
While her face was just as yellow and just as bright.
It didn’t take long for the scorn to be born
As the witch’s eyes squinted and she offered a frown.
With exercised gestures, the wand twirled in the air,
While the words that she uttered were the last ones he’d hear.
“His eyes shall be graved as he can not see much.
His head shall be hallow as he’s not very smart.
His mouth shall be stretched in a weird-looking grin,
While his teeth shall be as absent as the politeness he’s got within.”
Sparks flew high and circled the man overrun by despair.
In the blink of an eye, his majestic figure spun in the air
He shrunk to the size of a full, fleshy pumpkin
While his last expression was carved on its skin.
And this is how from an ill-fated joke,
Devised as lightly as the last words he spoke,
Spurred this tradition to keep witches at bay
By carving a companion for Old Hallow’s Day.

Lines (Trigger Warning: SH)
At first
I used that one line
As a reminder
To never forgive them.
Every time they hurt me
I redrew it
And reopened it.
I wanted a permanent scar,
A tattoo of my home
So I would never speak to them
Too cordially,
Or trust them
With my future children,
Or sit by them
At family gatherings.
And then I drew more.
One for every time
They took away my hope
And my freedom
And my confidence.
I kept a tally of the days
They wouldn't let me breathe;
The days I couldn't let myself breathe.
I justified it in my head
With a projector
That displayed little white lies
Behind my eyes at all times
Constantly playing on repeat
At school,
At home,
At work,
In the shower.
I'm not hurting myself.
This is a physical representation
Of what they are already doing to me.
A little reminder I like to write
In red pen on my arm,
To remind me
That I'm not
A problem child
Who throws temper tantrums,
Who can't be trusted with
Shower water
Or a door
Or food
Or a school-provided computer
Or decision-making
Without supervision
And reprimanding
And punishment;
Who can't receive encouragement
Or praise
Or grace
Or happiness
Without taking advantage of it.
And I liked writing that reminder
A lot.
Maybe a little too much.
Because I began to write and rewrite it
All over my body.
It gave me peace
Knowing I could just look down at myself
And see those words
And automatically know
What my life consisted of at the moment.
And what it always would consist of.
I loved the familiar burst
Of dopamine
Running through my brain
Through my cheeks
Across my shoulders
And into my chest
Where it radiated
Throughout the rest of my body;
Specifically the sweet spots
On hidden areas of my left limbs
Where I sometimes wrote and rewrote,
traced and retraced it
In layers.
It was calming,
A cure-all
For cancers,
Fevers,
Depression,
Anxiety,
Sleep issues...
It was like CBD
But less advertised.
I couldn't stop
To save my life.
But I did.
Eventually.
I can't wash the ink off,
Though.
I've tried.
I always just end up
Rubbing my arms and legs
Raw with a washcloth,
And I sigh
At the things
I would rather have left
Undone
And probably forgotten
By my ever-distracted,
Scattered mind.
Lessons From the Band
While there are many things you can learn from a band,
I will just tell you some.
While playing by yourself is good,
playing with others is more fun.
The guitar is the one who paves the way
he's the first to play.
He leads the others in song
but still lets them be heard.
The piano is a team player
ready to fill in without fail.
The drums holds them all together
although he's not their leader.
The bass plays in the background
but makes the song feel whole.
He's not really heard
but when he's not there,
it's noticeable.
They all work together,
to make beautiful music.
Beta Update 9/15/21
Greetings fellow Prosers,
A long awaited update on the beta site has finally arrived. It'll look familiar to those of you who've tried out the beta, but with a few highly-requested features.
Search
We added the search function to the beta. You can find it at the bottom-left side of the navigation sidebar.
Book Editing
You can now edit and re-arrange chapters of your books. When editing a book, select "Chapters." Then you can click and drag to re-order them, or use the "Add Existing Post" or "Write a new Chapter" buttons to add other posts to your books.
Twitter Login
Login with Twitter is now functioning properly on the beta.
Email Notifications
Email notifications were disabled, then enabled, then disabled. They should be in working-order on the beta. We had to do a lot of work to prepare for our new newsletter system. The newsletters will resume regularly upon the full release of the beta.
Under the Hood
We completed the final slew of updates and changes needed in order to update the site, and... eventually... the app. These changes may result in some pages not being laid out correctly. We've done our best to manually test everything but if you encounter a bug, please don't hesitate to email us!
The update will be coming very soon to a Prose near you. We have no immediate plans to retire the old site, which will remain accessible at https://old.theprose.com. If there's anything else you'd like to see in the update, or any old functions that aren't supported or aren't working properly on the new site, please let us know. We want the update to be strictly an upgrade - i.e. there's nothing on the old site that can't be achieved or is in any way degraded on the new site.
If you haven't had a chance to check out the beta, please do so! You'll find the future at https://beta.theprose.com. Comment on this post or email us with any feedback, concerns, or suggestions.
